Hello I'm new to the forum! I have a herd of 5 sows currently dealing with 3 guinea pigs with a uri but two are fine. They were taken to the vet and was prescribed Co-trimoxazole for 7 days and after 7 days had passed only one of them had signs of improvement such as no more clicking/hooting noises. Only two at the te were infected but it became three so the newly infected piggie was taken to see the vet so she could be prescribed antibotics and also a change for my other two which was in the plan. I have been given zithromax to be adminstered once a day combined with metacam which was prescribed before with previous antibotic for 7 days. My worry is he said if this does not work it will be the next step for a culture but from what I have read on here uris take up to 2 weeks to even show improvement or 5 days. Also the zithromax is known to be a strong medication and good but due to my expierence so far I feel like it's not going actually help? I'm just wanting advice and peoples expierences who have dealt with zithromax and if it has worked for them and just dealing with uris in general. I really don't want to lose any of my pigs to this! I'm doing as I should but I feel so defeated to the point it feels like my fault and I haven't done enough!

Hi and welcome

Due to long term preventative overuse/not properly administered or too early aborted intake of antibiotics in the meat/farming industry but also in pets, we have seen a massive rise in resistancy cases in recent years, especially with respiratory issues where low grade residues of bacteria have been allowed to mutate and develop resistancy. Hence where lab tests are coming in.

Not your fault at all - just your bad luck in the cosmic lottery of short straws.
All you and your vet can do is hang on in there and work your way down the steps.

Other members with more recent personal experience than me may be able to help you better with practical advice.

I had a piggy who was prone to URIs due to poor care in his original home. Shortly after I adopted him he went down with one, which repeated courses of Baytril and Septrin failed to cure. Eventually I happened to see an exotic vet who recommended Zithromax, and that did the trick. It always took 10 days plus to completely cure the URI.

With some pigs, Zithromax affects their appetite, similar to Baytril, but it didn't with my boar. It's usually recommended to give a probiotic to bolster the gut flora when giving those antibiotics and help recovery.

I hope your 3 all do get better soon.

I don’t know if it’s common but my girl was put on it for a UTI and took a really bad reaction to it and ended up needing an emergency appointment at the exotics vet.
