Hey,

My oldest piggie Poppy has recently been given antibiotics (Septrin to be precise). She has 0.2ml twice daily as she has a stuffy nose and rattling breath. It is her first day on these, so far on her first dose. Is it normal for her breathing to go more wet sounding and for her to keep sneezing? Could this be the antibiotics loosening the gunk in her system?

It usually takes about a day for an antibiotic to kick in fully. The sneezing is more likely from some dust or pollen in the nose.

All the best for good recovery. If you want to help ease her breathing, please place a bowl of steaming water next to the cage and keep that refreshed.

Shes now had a 4 doses of the antibiotics. Last night was rough as she was struggling to breathe and I didnt think she was going to make it. She seems better today but is coughing and sneezing more and seems to be passing snot. Could this be the Septrin forcing the fluid out of her body?

It sounds like the URI has gone a stage up and may require a stronger antibiotic, as well as a diuretic (frusol or furosemide) to help clear/drain the lungs (pneumonia) and some mucus thinning bisolvon powder to help clear the airways. Please see a vet as soon as you can. Keep a bowl if steaming water next to the cage. You can also steam up your shower and then place her in there (dry) for half an hour to see whether that helps ease the breathing a bit. But it rather looks like the septrin is not working. :(

Please step in with syringe feeding and watering, as the need to breathe comes before the need to breathe and only thirdly the need to eat. In an emergency you can use mushed up pellets, as shown in our detailed how to guide. She will need little but often round the clock to keep the guts going.

Thanks for your advice Wiebke. Its baffling as her breathing sounds so much better but she just seems to be passing mucus. She is eating more but she also has dental issues which is another set back. She seems much more herself today. I have been doing the steam in a bowl trick which seems to help with her breathing. I just want her back to normal

If she is eating better, then that means that the antibiotic is working. She may need another round to clear it all of she has it badly. Just be patient and hang on in there. By the sound of it, she is going to make a recovery even if it takes time. URI can kill, so it is a very serious illness. If necessary, contact your vet for support to drain and clear her airways; as soon as breathing is easier, she will eat and drink more.

I would still weigh her daily at the same time and if necessary top her up to make sure that she has as much strength to fight her illness. You can so give her extra vitamin C syringed with a bit of water for best effect to help boost the immune system. Information on that is also in the syringe feeding guide.

Just an update. The septrin seemed to work and her snuffles went away but sadly she passed away this morning. Whether that was because of the URI or something else we are unsure. We are all gutted.
