Uri - Getting Better?

Poor Errol has a URI and has been on antibiotics. He's been feeling very sorry for himself and we've had to hand feed him.

He has one day left of the course of antibiotics (ten days total) and his symptoms have cleared up massively - he was croaking and his breathing was erratic, but now he is breathing normally. However, when he gets stressed, ie. when we have to syringe feed him, his breathing sounds bad again - should we take him back to the vets and ask for more antibiotics? I really don't want to have to continue with the Baytril, he hates it so much!

If the symptoms have not completely gone, it would be better if you had him checked up.

Baytril is the most horrible medication a guinea pig can get, but it is still the only officially licensed guinea pig antibiotic. You can mix it with the same measure of ribena or give some ribena immediately afterwards to help cover or clear the taste. Please be careful when syringe feeding to give more than a mouthful (0.3-0.5 ml) in one go to prevent anything running down into the lungs or backing up into the nose.
 
My vets always see a piggy with a URI before they finish the course of ABs to see if they need a longer course or a different AB so I would definitely ask for a re-check before he finishes the course.
Baytril is awful (I've accidentally tasted it) but it does work and is licensed for piggies.
 
Errol got much better, but starting croaking again so he's back on baytril after yet another vet trip - he still isn't eating by himself but he is eating very, very well when I syringe feed him. He seems interested when I offer veg but will chew, then spits it out and walks off - like he's embarrassed he can't eat. He's also got really soft poos, is this from the baytril? I have been giving a probiotic with his syringe feed. Feel at a bit of a loss :(
 
It's possible that if he hasn't been eating properly for a while that his teeth have started to overgrow, do the incisors look slanted at all? How is his breathing? is he eating hay at all? How far are you from Northampton? would you be able to get to Simon Maddock at all? sorry lots of questions.
 
He's trying his best to eat hay but seems to drop it out of his mouth - I've just checked his teeth and they are slanted, as bad as little triangles... we're not too far from Northampton so if could definitely take a trip to see Simon

I'd definitely recommend getting him to Simon if you can so he can sort his teeth for you x
 
If you could get him to Simon that would be brilliant. There is something going on if they are slanty.
