Back at the begining of Feb Nutty had an awful URI that we very nearly lost him to. He stopped eating and drinking and we were at a point where I thought this was it. But after a two week course of baytril he was completely recovered. His breathing was normal, he was eating for himself (he had completely stopped and wasn't passing poop or peeing), no eye or nose discharge and though his weight was stable it was a little lower than I would like.

Then two weeks ago the hooting, heavy, horrible sounding breathing is back. Seeing as baytril worked so well last time he has had a two week course with no improvement. In fact, if anything he is worse. Eye and nose discharge/crusty. Bad breathing. Still eating but a reduced appetite. The vet has today given him a week course of septrin. I used this before for an ear infection in another piggy but I don't know how effective it is on whatever Nutty has.

What could this be? Is it the URI back? What can I do to help him? If this doesn't work, what would be the next step? Any advice or experiences would be really helpful.

If you have any other questions, please ask. Thanks in advance!

Oh Amy I am so sorry he is poorly again.

Thanks. It is a bit of a nightmare and he is a right brat about taking his medicine. I have to sit him on his heatpads with a selection of veggies before he will allow the syringe anywhere near him. He still has his pigsonality! :)

It is a worry though and sounds awful.

When one of my lot had URI i put a tiny tiny bit of vics vapourub on the tip of his nose just above the nostrils not on them i felt it helped along with the AB

Poor Nutty, as recommended by a lot of posters on here, maybe worth talking to the vet about Zithromax and also a diuretic such as furosemide which would help get rid of any fluid on the lungs. Hope Nutty starts to feel better soon.

Oh yes hoping your little piggy is ok x

Bloomin URI's grrrr Sorry to hear Nutty is unwell so quickly after his last one - classic symptoms of a stubborn infection :(
Baytril may not be the AB to use again so maybe ask your Vet for Marbocyl and Bisolvon - we had absolutely outstanding results from this combo with Sheila when she had pleurisy and trachitis last year :... Baytril wouldn't touch her and we feared the worst but the little minx was running around like a loon after two weeks on these meds. bossing huspig Bruce around as usual :x
Speaking to our exotic vet recently who confirmed that Baytril can cause 'anorexia' in piggies and they rarely Rx it but have had piggies who have had zero side effects from it.
Lots of healing vibes to Nutty and hugs to you x>>
