URI not going away!

I am another one who is struggling with stubborn URI symptoms and slow weight loss.

Llewelyn is now on his third lot of baytril. He reacted well to baytril the first couple of times, but the symptoms (loud raspy and wheezy breathing) have come back within days of him stopping. This time round the raspy breathing has come back twice a few days apart WHILE on baytril.

He is also on bisolvon powder and gets sudafed and vicks when he has breathing difficulties.

I am quite sure that it is NOT allergic since Cariad has had exactly the same symptoms back in December and again after Fflur's death, only not as strong.

I am booked in at the vets tonight anyway and wanted to ask you for your advice, especially in view of my being away for a week soon.

I have mentioned zithromax to my vets before, but they do not want to give it, as it belongs to a dangerous group of antibiotics.
 
I'm sorry that the nasty URI is still hanging around :( I know it isn't the same thing but I once had a rat with a recurrent URI. It would always come back after the baytril had stopped mallethead My vet once said that there could be something around that aggravated it but we never found out what it was. We were always concerned about her becoming immune to the baytril. May be a different antibiotic may help?

Sorry to hear this. :( Am wondering about Marbocyl, as that was my previous vet's antibiotic of choice for piggies.

I will mention it to my vet; I don't think we can continue with baytril and I don't think that septrin is especially useful in cases of URI.
 
I'm sorry to hear this Wiebke. I've got no advice for you, just wanted to wish you luck at the vets today.
 
I will if it doesn't go away! sadly, these things always happen just before you are booked to go away!

I hope you have better luck persuading the vet to switch to Marbocyl. It is in the same "family" as Baytril (Marbocyl = marbofloxacin; Baytril = enrofloxacin) so maybe the vet will be willing to switch to this instead. I agree that a different antibiotic is probably the best thing right now.

Strange as it sounds, an anti-inflammatory may help too. A steroid like Dexadreson is recommended by the CCT, just a couple of doses when treating for respiratory infection (alongside Bisolvon and antibiotics).

Or maybe your vet would speak to Simon on the phone about the safety of Zithromax?

Hope that he gets better soon and that the vet will be able to prescribe a different antibiotic. x x x
