Hello everyone

I took Alfie to the vets last Wednesday 28th May as i noticed he was sneezing. The vet diagnosed an URI and said lets treat it with Baytril for 10 days at 10ML.
Alfies sneezing seemed to ease off until yesterday and now he has a runny nose which is clear fluid and is sneezing like before.
I have another 3 days worth of medication left, do i wait until that is used up then phone the vets or do i ring now? His cage mate Badger is not sneezing. Could it be an allergy to the hay I'm using> I'm currently using Wilko Timothy Hay aswell as aubiose hemp bedding. They are fed Nuggets and get fresh veg once in the morning and once at night.
When Alfie sneezes on me i can feel it spray my skin, i really feel for the poor little guy.

edit: I Now have a vets appointment for 1.15pm tomorrow

Thanks for any advice you can give

Baytril is not the best antibiotic for a URI. Septrin or Zithromax are usually more effective. Bisolvon is also useful for a snotty pig, as it helps to clear up the excess mucus. Discuss these with your vet. I hope Alfie improves soon. x

I agree with Elwickcavies you may want to discuss using another antibiotic with your vet as well as asking for bisolvon to help ease the rhinitis. Baytril is unfortunately still the only officially licensed antibiotic for guinea pigs despite it not being the most effective one or the one that can cause major side effects. medicine has changed so quickly over the last few years that the paper work has not caught up.

It may be a good idea to look around for dust extracted hay and perhaps give fleece bedding a try to see whether changing the bedding is making a difference? You can discuss the possibility of an allergy with your vet after making sure that you are really not dealing with a URI.

Thank you, il mention the 2 antibiotics to the vet tomorrow.
I will also get some fleece to use and will search for dust free hay
