Hi everyone

Happy Easter to those of you that celebrate.

My guniea pig has been diagnosed with glaucoma and is in Truspot drops for life (shes currently on day 10), she has had an eye pressure test since starting the drops and we are all good there.

The day after our last vet visit (where she was thoroughly checked over) she started making this little noise from her nose. I suddenly thought URI, need to go back to the vets, then it stopped.

Over the past 36hrs is has come and gone. When she is stationery shes totally quiet and normal. Its only when I move her/pick her up that I hear it faintly or sometimes when she moves- but its not all the time.

As it wasnt constant (which is what I would expect from a URI?) I thought maybe she got dust up there but it is still there intermittently. When I say intermittently it was gone for almost all of Saturday.

I have done some reading on the drops and found that Trusopt can cause post nasal drips in other animals/humans but cant find anything on guniea pigs specifically.

Her nose isn't runny/crusty etc.
No sneezing.
She looks bright and happy.
Eating well.
Pooping well.
Weight is stable.
Breathing looks okay when looking at her flanks.

I'm basically trying to weigh up if I need to take her to the vets asap (because of the bank holiday it would have to be the out of hours vets which are pretty pants when it comes to piggies and its like a pet A&E, sometimes the wait time is 3hrs).

Does anyone have any experience with these drops and/or post nasal drips in guniea pigs?

Does it still sound like a URI? Ill 100% take her to the vets if she needs to go, I just dont want to put any unnecessary stress on her as shes been back and forth to the vets a lot recently and with the 3+hr wait time she gets stressed out.

Thanks!

I don’t have experience of those drops but generally a noise from the nose is irritation not a respiratory infection, particularly if it comes and goes or clears with a sneeze.
The main sign of a URI is crackling or rasping in the chest.

I would also say that if it is known to cause it in other animals, then it probably does cause it in guinea pigs but you may not find anything given piggies are generally under researched.

We can only ever say to speak to your vet if you get worried about her though as we obviously cannot rule out a problem
