What is the best antibiotic to treat an upper Respiratory Infection/ pneumonia? They put her on smz. But she was found in the cold wet box’s. They put her in an incubator to help her hold her heat? I’m just wondering what you guys have had the best luck with in an Antibiotic.

Hi, I believe smz is a combination antibiotic commonly known as bactrim, septrin, or sulfatrim. It is safe for guinea pigs and a good treatment for many infections including pneumonia. Sounds like your vet is doing all the right things, hope she gets well soon x

I'm sure my old boar was given septrin for pneumonia and it brought him back to health again. Given by needle though at the vets for 1 week

Hi!

Poor girl!

There is no specifically recommended antibiotic for respiratory infections; it very much depends on what am individual piggy is responding do. Smz is another name for the same medication that is better known as bactrim in the US and as septrin and now vet brand sulfatrim; sulfatrim is the second antibiotic that is licensed for guinea pigs in the UK.
If stronger antibiotics are needed, then doxycycline or azithromycine (zithromax in the UK) as a last ditch AB can be used. your vet will be carefully weighing up the advantages and disadvantages of any possible medication.

Fingers very firmly crossed that she can pull through!
