Basil has finished all his anti-biotics! but is still not right, he had the last dose yest! is this to soon to worry or should I wait afew days for the anti-biotics to kick in!

he is eating alot of hay and abit of veg and food, but not as much as normal, he has lost alot of weight, what foods are good for getting a guinea to put weight on?

Also he is not drinking or atleast I havn't seen/heard him drink, ive been syringing him water, how much water should I be syringing him a day ? x

Awww poor baby, when my little fella Artie suffered from an URI he didnt regain his appetite for about a week afterwards, is he indoors atm? If not bring him in so he's not using all his energy keeping himself warm and I'd suggest giving him a Vit C supplement as well, and feed him is favourite fruit and veggies throughout the day Artie adored sweetcorn when he was recovering have you tried that? Hope he gets better soon good luck! x

What antibiotic has Basil been, which dose and for how long? URI can be rather tenacious.

However, if there are no signs of him getting better after one course, I would check whether the dose was too low or whether there is another cause for it. Make sure that you ask your vet to check his heart when you take him back; allergies can be another reason for URI like symptoms, but I wouldn't expect such a loss of weight.

Ask you vet for Critical Care to supplement his diet and hand feed him. If you pm Laura you can get a fact sheet with tips for hand feeding from her. Loss of appetite is one of the signs of URI. Baytril can affect the guts and the appetite as well if he was on it. In that case, a probiotic will also help to keep the guts going.

About a month... he was also suffering from a eye infection and a rui (chest infection) so he was on a lot of medication at the time and i found hand feeding him helpful too, you could try mushing his pellets up with warm water and spoon feeding him it worked well for me. I also gave Artie Beetroot, as its high in energy, and fat! :) It might help if you break up his veggies, artie wouldn't touch his carrot until i broke it up into tiny little bits...Arthur was so small in comparison with his cage mate who was the same age, Artie was eight weeks old when his illnesses started and now he's four months old and is a bundle of energy and is HUGE and won't stop eating tehee! :(

Here's a website on handfeeding piggies, i found this so helpful!:

I'd suggest making our piggie as warm and comfortable as possible, and if you do decided to hand feed him keep him wrapped up in a towel - it makes it easier and keeps him calm. Give him plenty of cuddles and i hope he gets well soon!

He was on Marbocyl 0.3 a day and I had 2 syringes one with 0.6 in and one with 0.9 in, he had the last dose yest! he is happily eating hay and nibbles small amonts of food but not as much as he used to! I'm going to take him back to the vets by the end of the week if he is no better! should I carry on syringing him water? x

They always say time's the greatest healer, if your still a little concerned with him i'd suggest taking him back to the vets - they can be so reassuring esp to a overly paranoid new piggie owner (as i was! hehe!) And can check him over to make sure he has no new / or underlying problems.

He will get better, sometimes piggies can be a little slow with the treatment as Arthur was, just keep going with feeding him, and keeping up his weight and cuddles! Keep us updated on the little fella get well soon! :)

thankkss and oo my mum bought bas some sweetcorn and he is currently demolashing it!

Hope your wee guy it doing better!

My previous experience with URIs is not good. After weeks of antibiotics...baytril and septrin there was still no improvement so we started to wonder if it was actually a heart problem rather than a URI. Eventually he couldn't hang on any more :( Not to say this will happen to you....he could have got help sooner had it not been for a poor vet.

Does he grunt when he is breathing? Does his nose flare?

There is a stronger antibiotic...not 100% of the name.....zirthromax maybe? If he doesn't improve you could ask about this....vet may be reluctant as it's not legal for piggies....then again the only legal antribiotic for pigs is baytril I think.

Anyway good luck :)
