Hi everyone.

My piggy Jaffa has some loud breathing going on, sounds like a blocked nose type of breathing.
He has no other symptoms of URi, just the occasional bit of discharge from the nose which comes out clear.

I rang the vets and asked for sulfatrim, had some left over from his previous visit so had been giving him that. I explained to the vet that the antibiotics were helping but I ran out so wanted to give him a bit longer on sulfatrim to see if it would eventually clear.

The vet has given him a bottle of sulfatrim to give him for 10 days twice a day.
She said to bring him back if there’s no improvement.

Anyone have experience with sulfatrim? Is it a successful type of antibiotic? Is the recovery for a uri usually successful?

As mentioned earlier his only symptom is the loud breathing, he occasionally sneezes and has a tiny bit of clear discharge now and then.

Thanks

I’m no expert but I’ve found that sulfatrim to be very successful and well tolerated by piggies :) It might be worth doing a pro biotic mix too just to top up the good tummy bacteria :) Hope little one feels better soon!

That’s great to hear. Thanks for your response. I normally give him some type of probiotic when he gets antibiotics, I’ve got some pro c probiotic powder and also some fibreplex.

Thank you, I hope so too❤️

Hi and welcome

Sulfatrim is usually OK with any standard variety of URI and it is certainly safe to give to piggies. It is the new licensed unflavoured brand of adult strength septrin.

Please be aware that your piggy may just be reacting to high pollen etc. in the last few days and not have a URI, in which any antibiotic is pretty useless and can at the best only mitigate the symptoms but not cure them.
Can you please clarify whether you have spoken to the vet or whether your boy's airways have been checked?

He’s had on and off crackly breathing since we got him. I’ve had him a year and he’s had numerous URI’s but they’ve never been severe as I’ve caught them early.

The vet didn’t check him as he hasn’t seen a vet. The vet that normally sees him rang me on the phone and asked about my concerns, i explained I’d been giving him sulfatrim for a few days after I noticed the breathing. She said the fact his symptoms are starting to subside that she’d give him some more sulfatrim to help clear it.

So yes I have spoken with a vet first and she was happy to give him some treatment as I explained the symptoms.

Thank you for adding that background information; it makes the circumstances clearer.

The best antibiotic varies according to the bacteria involved, but sulfatrim is one I have used in the past with respiratory ailments, sometimes successfully and sometimes a different med was needed. It is a safe med for piggies, though.

Jaffa has an appointment last night at the vets.

Vet said that he still sounds congested & it seems as though the sulfatrim hasn’t done the job of clearing him completely.

She has prescribed Zithromax, he has to have 0.63ml twice a day for a week.

Also he is not blind, the vet did an eye test with light and said his pupils respond well.

Otherwise he’s well, eating lots, pooping and peeing lots (TMI sorry) and being his usually cheeky charming self.

All the best!

Most piggies respond well to zithromax, but when it wipes out the appetite, it does so badly because it is such a strong antibiotic.
If that happens, make sure that you use poo soup and a course of fibreplex in addition to the necessary syringe feeding support.

All the best! I hope that the zithromax will do the trick!

I’ve got oxbow critical care and fibreplex at the moment. I ended up breaking the fibreplex syringe so the contents is currently in a small container. I’ve ordered some oxbow ‘fine grind’ critical care and also some ‘bio lapis’ as the vet said that and fibreplex are good probiotics for pigs.

I hope it doesn’t happen, he’s such a good eater. Is it common for them to loose their appetite during the treatment?

As stated in my previous post, the majority of piggies react well to it and has no problems. ;)

Hi. I’m starting to feel guilty and really sad about Jaffa.

He’s been on zithromax a week tomorrow and he absolutely hates the taste of it. I have to get my mum to help me get it into him because he just won’t tolerate it. He also doesn’t like the taste of his bio lapis (probiotic), so I’m having to get that into him via a syringe too.

I know it’s for his own good but I feel so bad and guilty for making him take it, he gets very grumpy and squeals at me when I go to pick him up to give him the meds as I think he knows what’s coming.

Am I being mean?

Try giving pro c probiotics from pets at home. My pigs all have and still do beg for it

Zithromax has saved the lives of so many piggies, here at TEAS. The piggies don't particularly like the taste, but it is important that it is given as prescribed. I have never had a problem with it affecting appetite.
He just hates the taste. It’s not affecting his appetite but he’s chewing everything more so than usual. Blankets, door mats etc. Never seen him so nibbly till a few days ago. I’ve just given some poop soup to him as @Wiebke said the chewing is due to the gut being upset by not having any good bacteria. Can I give him the antibiotics now? It’s been about 10 minutes since the poop soup.
