Hello,
I have two piggies (Jules and Drusilla) who have been suffering with a URI.

I took them to the vet when I first noticed that Jules was slightly lethargic with a crusty eye and Drusilla was sneezing and has a crusty nose. They both got put on a course of Baytril. They were on this for 2 weeks and then when they both seemed better the Baytril was stopped.

A few days after stopping the course, they both got worse again with sneezing and crusty eyes. I took them back to the vet and they were placed back on Baytril for another 3weeks.

On their latest check up, the vet noticed that although Jules fine, Drusilla is still sneezing. The vet wanted to try doxycycline for both and they have been on this over the past 5 days.

The issue is that Drusilla seems to be getting worse (sneezing, very wet snot and sounding very congested). They have an appointment in two days time and I can’t get a sooner one.

Do you think that it is worth switching her back to the Baytril in the mean time to hopefully stop her from getting worse or stick with the doxycycline until we see the vet on Thursday?

Thank you!

Sorry for the long message

I’m sorry to hear this

We can only advise you to stick with the advice your vet has given ie continue to give the doxy. It is usually one of the better antibiotics to deal with a URI.
Do give your vet a call to discuss today (even if they can’t fit you in for an appointment) if things are getting worse

Otherwise our advice is to switch to daily weight checks so you can more closely monitor hay intake and step in with syringe feeding if she is losing weight.
Being congested and not being able to breathe easily can mean they stop eating enough hay (the need to breathe comes before the need to eat so you need to be prepared to step in). Doxy is also an antibiotic which can quite strongly impact the appetite

I hope she is ok

Hi thanks for this.

Yeah she has been eating the same as normal.

I have ordered fiberplex and critical care so that should arrive today just incase it is needed.

She is also being nebulised with f10 twice a day so hopefully covered on all fronts. I will keep an eye on her.

Thanks again
