since the beginning of the year one or two of my piggies have had been funny noises, cut a long story short - vets thought maybe it was the start of URI so they were both treated twice and seemed to be better, but now again today Charlie sounds wheezing again - i have just listend to his chest and you can hear wheezing inside him - they have dust free hay - we dont use any sprays or anything like that in the bedroom and they all live on vet bed - i just wanted to ask if your piggy has had URI has it returned time and time again? i thought well surely if maybe this URI hadn't completely gone over the months, he would have gone down hill very quickly? he eats fine and everything - can some piggies just sound wheezy without actually having anything wrong with them?

Hi Natasha,

Could it be the detergent that you are using to clean the vet bed? Maybe put him on hay for a week if you can and see if it clears up.

I would have thought any wheezing wasn't ideal. Maybe it is more of an allergy to something.

When my guinea pig had her URI at Christmas, she was on Baytril for the longest time. I eventually completed the course but she was still symptomatic, mostly with the runny nose. That later cleared up - I suppose whilst the infection itself was gone, she still had secretions to be cleared from her respiratory tract. Maybe that's what is causing the wheezing? If the wheezing is getting worse, or not improving at all, I'd say a return trip to the vets is needed. How long as your piggy had this wheeze?
Sometimes guinea pigs can be especially susceptible to URIs. My own pig was just eight weeks when she got hers, and the vet warned that it was unusual for them to have them so young, and that she might just be one of "those" pigs who gets them often. How old are yours? I know they're more common in elderly piggies.
 
I had a piggie once who had chest infections a lot from a young age. I don't know if it was a heart problem or genetic but he had a shorter life than my other piggies (4 years). He would constantly wheeze and couldn't run around for very long because he would get worn out and have to lie down. He didn't run very fast compared to my other piggies either. He was treated with antibiotics as and when. It might be one of those things?
 
i use fairy non bio, but have been using that for a while now - when you look at him he doesn't look ill at all - eating all his food, running around the cage, he doesn't have a runny noise, just a bit of wheezing - I've got some baytril left over from Louis - i'll give him that over the weekend and if there no sign of improvement, I'll take him back to the vets.

hiya my Joe has had a URI twice now bless him he sounded like a little old man who had smoked 60 a day for years! but like your piggy he was acting just the same and eating just fine. I got him some baytrill and even after one dose the rattling was so much better i carried on for 10 days then stopped as he was fine.

About two months later he was weezy again so i took him back to the vet i said to him was it back again because i had not finished all the medicine Vet said the 10 days should have been enough this time he gave me more of the baytill so i kept giving him it for 2 weeks.

Touch wood its cleared up I'm not sure what caused it, i put him on Carefresh for a week as i thought it could have been the Hay but he is back on Hay and fine so i think it was just one of those things as like you we are careful and dont use sprays or anything near the pigs.

Hope your little man gets better soon.

I am at a lost end with Charlie - he had another course of baytril and some other thing, which helps their degistive system - charlie sounds awful again and i just dont know what to do - the vet said that he might have had a problem before we got him and that maybe his insides are just affected and the wheezing wont go away - he sounds really bad and i just dont know what to do - again he's eating well and not lost any weight - he's been on baytril now 2/3 times - the vet said something about flushing out the lungs to get anything off his chest - last resort cos i hate having my piggies undergo operation - has anyone had this before where the vet has said about flushing out their piggies inside around the lungs to clear anything? many thanks - i just feel down as i thought he was better :-(
