Hi,

I lost a piggy early this week. It was a typical fine one day, fluffed up not eating and laboured breathing the next. I took her to the vet and syinged recovery but lost her in the night. Her long bonded mate was very depressed so I introduced him to a girl from my colony of 5. This morning I noticed she was rasping a bit when breathing and making a low sound that I couldnt tell if it was her voice or lungs. I listened to my other pigs chests and I could hear 3 out of 7 of them breathing (but no low sound). I have no idea if this is normal or if I'm being paranoid. Ive booked to take them all to the vets tonight. I have lots of experience treating gps but never a uri. I don't have a lot of faith in my vet, but she is good in that she will discuss treatment with me and isn't afraid to "check the book" so I'm trying to gather as much info as I can before I go. Does anyone have experience in diagnosing and treating uri? I've had a look at guinealynx and my pg book. Thanks.

I am so sorry for your loss. You really need to find another vet who understands guinea pigs. Check the forum for listings of vets. It is worth travelling. When a guinea pig is not breathing well they need to see a vet right away without delay.

A few months ago one of my girls got a URI. The vet gave her baytril and I made sure she was kept warm and given probiotic and lots and lots of vitamin C filled veg. Luckily I managed to catch it early and my girl was back to normal within a few weeks. Good luck at the vets.

A highly recommended vet in your area.

Thanks for the replies! Ive called Goddard vets. Anne isn't in until monday so will keep my current appointment with my vet and depending on whether I think a second opinion is in order can take them to her monday as well. Not ideal but atm I'm hoping its paranoia on my part after losing Feather. Thanks again.

Well I just got back from the vets - all piggies have a full bill of health!

When I got home after work none were making a funny noise anymore - but I thought I'd better go along anyway just to be sure they were ok. The vet was one I hadn't seen before and he came across as very experienced. He said to keep an eye on them and not to hesitate to bring them in if I'm concerned in the future. My 5yr old boy Apollo is apparently 'rude with health' - so chuffed!

Very relieved and hoping it was all just my paranoia after loosing Fea...

I am so pleased to hear all your piggies are well. That is wonderful news.
