My 2 year old guinea pig was treated for a UTI a few weeks ago after I noticed bloody urine. We finished the course of abx and the symptoms went away, but returned again a few weeks later. I’m now noticing her crying when urinating and straining so I took her to the vet and she has urinary stones. She put her on phenoxybenzamine (plus others like pain meds) in the meantime before she recommended a cystotomy. My exotic vet quoted me $850-1090. Does anyone have any experience with this? I know it’s not a small surgery, and I will pay for it if it’s what she needs but I want to hear others opinions/experiences first. Thank you so much!

Hi and welcome

I am very sorry.

Bladder stones in guinea pigs with their highly alkaline urine cannot be dissolved medically, so you need a bladder operation in order to remove the stones, unfortunately. :(

Generally, unless there are complications like stones stuck in the bladder wall, it is a fairly straightforward operation with a good recovery rate, especially in sows.

Thank you! Is this a normal cost?

I’m sorry to hear this

It’s rather difficult for us to comment on the cost as we are a UK based forum (even here charges will vary) but US vet charges tend to be more expensive

Best wishes for the surgery

I’m sorry your piggy has bladder stones. Good luck with the operation. Sending healing vibes to your piggy. ❤️

I'm sorry that your girl is suffering from bladder stones.
Kylie's operation was a bit more than a week ago and it was difficult because the stone was attached to the bladder wall.
So far everything is looking good. I hope that it will stay this way.
