Urine Infection But Not Eating...

Natcho 3yr old piggy has been to vets today. she has what he thinks as urine infection but not completely sure as real mucky stuff when pressed her tum... antibiotic jab at time and more to give from tomorrow. But she is quiet and not eating, have offered favourites have given water by syringe. Any other ideas please....so looking so sad :/

@Winnies It sounds like a case of diarrhea, soft poo or bloat. Which will put her off her food.

You will need to hand feed her if she is not eating on her own. Their digestive system are very different to ours so if they don't have food travelling through it then it starts to shut down and can cause more serious issues.

If you don't have any syringe food to hand, you can moisten pellets by soaking them in hot water and allow them to cool.

Using a 1ml syringe, cut the tip off so it makes the end wider. Suck up some of the pellets and then slowly feed it to her, no more than half a syringe at a time.

There's no recommended amount to give but you need to try to keep her weight maintained so weigh her daily, at the same time each day.

If she doesn't perk up by Monday then she'll need to go back to the vet for further diagnosis. She may need an xray and gut motility drugs.

If she worsens then you'll need to take her to the emergency vet before Monday.

Please start syringe feeding any guinea pig asap that is not eating! It is abolutely vital to keep it alive.
You can use mushed up pellets in an emergency or ask your vet for herbivore recovery formula until you can order it online. Prep the syringe tip as shown in our guide to allow the fibre to come through. Weigh daily at the same time to control the food intake. You need to feed the more often round the clock the less your piggy is eating. Our guide explains in detail how much and how you feed depending on the situation and the independent food intake.

Once to start giving the antibiotic, please also give a pinch of probiotic either 1 hour before (US recommendation) or 1-2 hours after the antibiotic (UK recommendation) to bolster the guts.

Please see your vet promptly if your guinea pig takes a turn for the worse or if things do not get any better after 3 days. Ask for a scan this time so you and your vet can get to the bottom of what is going on.

Thank you will try soft pellts. Vet did say bring back if no change. It was pus coming from her.
