I have a male guinea pig who is a year old. Recently I noticed that as soon as he gets done urinating, he turns around and licks where he just went. He has plenty of water in his water bottle (and it flows freely) but he doesn't seem to drink much of it. I've had a guinea pig before but never noticed this behavior. I also have another piggy in a separate cage (male also) that doesn't exhibit this behavior. Is this normal or something that should be looked into by a vet?

He is not licking the urine to drink it, but to taste it. No idea why, but it can occasionally happen. there must be something in there that fascinates him.

Violet did it in her pet carrier while we were at the vets a few weeks ago, and while we both commented that it was gross the vet said nothing about it being abnormal.

My two do it.. they also like to sniff and lick each others pee... I've never thought anything of it.. I think it's just piggies being piggies :P

Gizmo and I both thank you for the feedback. I'm glad to see this is normal piggy behavior that I'd just never seen before.
