Poor old Darling is getting on in years (she's at least 6).

I have noticed she s starting to get urine scald.

so … bum baths have commenced .

I'd be grateful for what's the best way to prevent this.

She spends a lot of time sat in hay trays , I really don't want to stop giving my guineas hay trays as they like them so much .

What's the best barrier cream to use ?

Hmm I haven't used a barrier cream at all. Has there been any tests to find out why she is getting scalds. The last one I had was bumble and she had arthritis in the bottom of her spine. Once on metacam the scald cleared right up

Oh heavens - I'd just put it down to old age . I'll arrange a check up for her .

i used sudocrem when my old pig got urine scald on his back feet soles.try using vet bed from pets at home where she normally lays. Its £35 a roll though. Its so hard to help an old guinea pig with scald. You need to find something that absorbs urine down into another layer below

Oh I hope the vet can help Darling. Let us know what s/he says Lisa. Sending vibes up North!

It could be Lisa. Bumble the first time was large ovarian cysts and second time was arthritis. I don't think any of the others have ever had it

I should add that both times with Bumble she was always wet and messy with it so it was obvious she was leaking urine

Hiya. Vet Kris recommended a bit of vasaline to help with Cocoas urine scald as a barrier, if need be. (I must add that Cocoa can’t clean or lick herself down there so that might not be suitable for all piggies) I know that Cocoa has complex problems & vet also said to bath her in a dilute solution of hibiscrub.
I would get your piggy checked out at vets to be on safe side though & vet can give her lady bits a good check. x

It's usually a sign of some sort of bladder issue Lisa.
I wash my girls who get it in dilute hibiscrub. Also l shave their bottoms and apply calendula lotion from GG. Plus vet bed of course.
Let me know how she goes on

:hmm: Am thinking I'll need to get her an appointment with Ellie Whitehead - another fact to throw into the occasion is that she drinks much more water than my other guinea pigs .
That could be for many reasons. One of my pigs drinks more water because he eats more nuggets.

Quick update :
Darling did NOT enjoy her bum and tummy wash on 5th Aug - she didn't stop moaning until I held her in her towel when I was drying her off ...

Darling after bum wash .webp

Fortunately, the problem has settled now she is on Metacam - so , no more washes needed :yahoo:. When Ellie palpated her, she had a sensitive bladder - so, this may be something that will settle . We'll see - I'm just glad she's feeling better .
