Latest update on Sasha and Aneka. Took both to vets again last Tuesday. Very long discussion with vet regarding these two. Tried to find my old thread to continue and not repeat but after trolling 7+ pages in the H&I, decided just easier to start new thread!
Previously both been on baytril, with Sasha on Septrin and Frusol sol as well, treating for Uri in both. Aneka's symptoms were rapid breathing and an intermittent cough, lethargy, lolling out after a bit to eat as if worn out. Little clicking in lungs but no nose discharge or any sign of heart problem.
Sasha, has been poorly since purchase. Severe mite infestation to stat with, culminating in E.cunniculi. Nearly running round completely flat to her right side, poor love! Excellent vet gave(can't remember names) paediatric drugs and her head was almost level in just two days, running round happily and enjoying life with the cavy clan and back to her wonderful antics well before the 10days treatment finished. Imagine how sick I felt when after all this she's gone through already and already falling behind my other new clan members in weight, the next morning after losing Echo to a gut distortion, I find her all huffled up, very weak to her head tilt side again and as listless as anything, breathing extremely sluggish as if it were just too much effort to be bothered. Emergency rush to vets left her in overnight on oxygen. X rays were startling. No lungs showing up as black spaces as they should, just see the trachea and (?) bronchials (the feeders that get the air in them, forgotten name!) faintly.
This is a long thread sorry, lots to cover to give full history so answers may be relevant.
Both girls started on above mentioned treatment, baytril, frusol sol, septrin, although not sure at that point in time as to whether contagious infection as both similar symptoms.
Returned Tuesday to vets. Aneka was still coughing and I say her breathing pattern does seem more rapid than my other piggy clan members. But she had only had baytril to this point. Little Sasha, although having a brief pick up point, was back to just sitting looking very forlorn. She weighs so little now that we discussed and agreed that these next treatments would be probably the final help we could give. If no improvement, her quality of life had to be considered.
These were the meds given and still on going.
Metacam twice daily, continuing with baytril twice daily, Karidox twice daily, Bricanyl syrup three times daily and lastly Bisolvon powder pinch on food twice daily.
Results: Both piggies have picked up extremely well, back to taking foodstuffs reasonably well, beginning to wheek at the world again. Now for some weight gain ideas, both drastically thin, especially little Sasha.
There are several exotic pet specialists at this vets I was referred to, initially with Echo. The one I seem to see most regularly is Italian. He has advised the use of a nebuliser, something which is apparently standard practice at most vets in his country for respiratory problems in small furries, reptiles and birds. He has suggested that if I would want to purchase one from eBay he would write up some drugs that will be beneficial for respiratory symptoms. As the animal breathes in the drugs are delivered much more directly to the lungs with greatly increased recovery time. You place them in a small transport cage or similar and enclose it with a plastic bag, vented at the opposite side to the nebuliser, which you would put through the front door grid(no bedding but I will check if newspaper is okay unless anyone on here knows differently).
Has any one else ever tried this type of treatment on cavies and what were the outcomes? I have ordered one as I'm willing to give it a try.
Sorry so long but can anyone help? Also, what to use for weight gain? Both are 5 months old, little Sasha looks 8weeks!
Thanks everyone look forward to your help and advice.

I have used a nebuliser, which I borrowed from a vet practice, rather than had to buy one. It was quite a few years ago now though, to be honest.

It's not something I have used either, but the rationale seems sound. I really hope this works for you. Are they eating well by themselves? I would look at syringe feeding them some ectra, even if they are, with critial care or similar, maybe mixed with some vegetably baby food and some extra cit C wouldn't go amiss. let us know how you get on.

i haven't had to for piggies, but both my rabbits were on twice daily nebulising. it worked wonders for them. vet said it works just as well for piggies and quite a few of their piggy patients are regularly nebulised. :)

I haven't used one myself but I too have heard that they can be very effective. Let us know how you get on.

Yep, going through packets of critical care, they lap it up off a teaspoon! Also giving vit c either mixed in the CC or in a small amount of water in drinks bottle and changed daily. Also probiotic added either to cc or in water and offered in a syringe and they willingly take several 1ml syringes of it! Am careful to leave an hour or two from giving the baytril, although my vet, Sergio, says its not particularly necessary! But having read guidance from Helen and others on here its something I'm going to continue to do. I was reading through some other posts to see if others had advice for weight gain. Have bought some Ella's kitchen baby veggie food today but Aneka backed away like it was poison and Sasha decided to paddle through it all, I thought they would lap it up if I Sat them on my knee with it just on a saucer you see! She is such a little tink! Very tiny but full of life which is why I want to fight her corner for her to give her a chance. Was wondering if there is anything like Complan or a build up feed of some kind that is specific for small animals that I can try? Do you know of anything at all please? Unfortunately, I dont have any working weighing scales at the moment of my own. Oh actualy I do have bathroom scales, I could see I she will register on those!
Look forward to more guidance, thank you.

Oh thank you for that! Did you have any bedding in at the time and if so what would you recommend please?

There are several members who have used oats to help sick guinea pigs put on weight. Just type "oats" into the search box on the top right hand of the screen under your miniature avatar to get all the information. There are various ways you can feed your guinea pigs oats so you may get some helpful advice from those threads.

we made our own 'chamber' from a plastic box from wilkos. the 80ltr one. we put a hole in the side and then the nozzle went through that. i put a fleece blanket down inside and some pellets and they went in there. both were fine with it, and my rabbit matt who had chronic snuffles, loved it. it was like a mini sauna. :)) it was such an important part of keeping them stable.

some don't like the chamber though, and prefer to just sit on your knee whilst you direct the steam towards them. i think i'd try this first with piggies and then see if the vet thinks they need it more than that.

honestly though, it made such a difference and it's such a great way to get the meds exactly where they're needed. then the meds kind of punch holes into the mucus so it drains more easily. don't panic if they seem a bit worse at first, because there can be quite a backlog to shift at first as it loosens mucus.

hope that helps :)

Thank you pelicano. Can you remember what the outcome was and if it had benefits?

Yes, it was definitely effective. I used to put the piggy (from my avatar, coincedentally!) in a carrier with nothing else in it, and affix the nebuliser nozzle somehow between the bars of the carrier. She wasn't in there for long enough to need hay and bedding.

That sounds brilliant, wish it would arrive. Have vet apt for follow up with them tomorrow, hope neb arrives to take with me! Thanks for warning that they may get worse first. Was it an on going treatment you had to do regularly?

Oh right I see, how long do you give them or does it depend on the size and condition of the individual piggie? She looks a lovely little piggie in your avatar, I have one that looks just like her, called Rena!

we did with matt yes as he had a chronic infection. but bisc we don't have to nebulise anymore as he became more stable over time. :)

i panicked so much when they first had it. it really shifted a backlog, so i always tell others so they don't panic like i did, think the worst, and ring the vets in a state. :))

Thanks for that! Nothing like being prepared! Wish me luck!

I honestly can't remember, but the solution that came from the vet came with instructions (including how long for).

My pig had a nebuliser when at the vets overnight...? Hope they're ok. So happy to read they're eating well x
