Using a tubular bandage - help!

Just thought I would mention that Clairelove uses micropore tape on their feet too, to cover their claws, this helps them not being able to scratch as bad. Poor little piggies, how could someone let them get to that stage without seeking a vet.:(

I did send claire a message when i got them in but she didn't get back to me yet. Micropore tape is an excellent idea for when I remove the tubular bandage - the wounds need air but I was so worried about the scratching, that will help enormously thank you for sharing it. :)

I mentioned these two to Anna at Wheek and Squeak when I saw her today. She's used a sock before as well like Pebble suggested.
Give her a call if you'd like more info. I couldn't remember all the details and she doesn't get to come on here very often but I'm sure she could offer some help.

Thank you Katie. I *REALLY* appreciate all the kind comments and constructive advice received here. It's wonderful to know how many people are rooting for these girls. I hope to be able to give you all positive (if slow) updates - thank you again and if you got something that isn't mentioned here please post - everything is helpful!

Dindy was just like your Piggies when she came to us. We used a small jar of some cream from P@H but I can't remember what it was, I believe sudocreme would work as well to stop the bandage sticking. We used some large diameter sized tubigrip or stockinette, socks have been known to be effective too. Cut two holes in the front, one for each leg and make several 'vests' so that they can be changed and washed regularly. You can see Dindy modelling hers below, she was completly raw underneath. The vest isn't tight, she was just very thin. She's now a very healthy 1300gms.

i think I remember Dindypigs story, I have always winced at these nasty mutilated pics, horrible.

I have done the girls tubigrip bandages again tonight and the had stuck in one or two places where the non-stick gauze had moved underneath. I have re-done with fresh stuff, gauze and bepanthen which is like sudocrem. Fingers crossed it wont stick again.

I have discovered that they are much happier on hay and paper than any other bedding, they LOVE veg (appetites back now we are off baytril and on septrin instead), they wheek like crazy at all rustles already which I love and we have been thinking there is no way we will be parting with them as I'm worried they may get skin issues again after this, I hope they get all their fur back - who knows. Their little personalities seem to be coming out. Princess (white) seems much younger than Kitty and is only 600g - was 700g before she came here so I have been syringing her and today she's done nothing but eat again so I am expecting her to be piling on the weight in no time. Overall I am pleased so far with their progress. Once the wounds aren't so deep I am going to put the micropore tape on the feet and take the tubigrip off and let the air really start to get to the wounds and hopefully accelarate the healing progress.

I'm pleased to have good news because we lost a rescue pig unexpectedly tonight, Robinson, looks like heart as his eyes were open and he's shown no signs of illness at all. Very sad :( so good news on the girls is very welcome.

Just a quick update on these two (photos later)

They are doing so much better than they were. They are STILL in the tubeygrip bandage but their wounds are healing despite that. They are still so itchy despite 3 mites treatment and fungal treatment too - anyone got ideas on this?

HUGE appetites and Princess the white one is gaining weight really well - she was like a skeleton before.

BIG progress but not there yet - need to find out why they itch so bad first.

Healing skin itches like mad so that's half of it at least. With so many open wounds they must be going crazy. Are they drying up ok or still raw and weepy?

If they are weepy, Inadine (iodine impregnated gauze) under the tubigrip can help with infection and drying up wounds. That's what we use on people even with sensative skin like diabetics etc. Your chemist should be able to sell you a few packs.

They will take a fair while to heal so you need to keep them comfy. Sock/tubigrip will stop a lot of scratching and also you could try finger size tubular bandage over their paws like socks/scratch mitts?!

Once they are healed they will need mosisturised as scar tissue needs care to remodel properly and settle into a flexible, new piece of skin. a simple moisturiser with nothing in it like e45 is good.

Wonder if my OH's crochet is up to making them a pair of little jumpers!

You're doing a cracking job so keep going. If I can htink of any more anti-itch ideas I will let you know but avoid anything with steroids in like dermovate/eumovate etc as steroids will slow the healing right down. Nutrition is a massive thing in wound healing too so make sure they are all topped up on vit c and veggies. I know zinc aids healing in humans so check that with your vet too.

Hugs and wheeks from me and my boys. x

Yes I was thinking the healing might be itching.

Was considering asking for a steroid shot to stop them itching. No you think?

I have done the scratch mitts thing more than once and I can't get it to work for more than a couple of hours - they still scratch and in the end the feet thing come off and even if they dont their scratching is so intense and the skin so thin it's bleeding.

They are all dried up under the tubigrip no more weeping.

Generally avoid steroids as they make healing slower and mask infection and other problems. They acheive one thing but create other problems.

Glad they've all dried up and are on the way to being healthy piggies.

I think moisturising is the way to go to help stop itching. You can e45 or seeing as it might need a fair bit of time maybe a big tub of generic aqueous cream from the chemist or boots.

I'll keep thinking though

Dindy took weeks to heal. Her scabs were itching her terribly. Imagine a scabbed over area on yourself about the size of a cushion, you'd be itching too. I can't be sure whether Dindy was later given an antihistamine or steroid to reduce the itching, check with your vet. I recomend you keep using the vests untill the scabs have dropped off, this will prevent any scabs being scratched off and infection setting in. You will soon be delighted to see clean skin and new soft downy hair growing.

yes I will. I give them infant piriton now but it doesn't help for long.

I am so over the moon with the results so far, I know it still looks a bit grim but being so much better to me they look great!

Do you think the gorgeous guineas aloe vera gel might help? Would it soothe and moisturise? Might be worth asking Chrissie.

I have aloe vera plant here - wonder if that's safe to put on their backs.
Anyone know?

I echo Gorgeous Guineas...Chrissie has performed miracles with these types of things (my rescued boy included) and she has cream specifically for this sort of thing.

As someone said, that is one of the worst things I have also ever seen on a guinea, heartbreaking but fantastic progress so far! Hugs and massive healing vibes!

OMG ... I have just read this thread!

That is absolutely awful ... poor little babes! How could anyone let an animal get in such a state? :{:(

Thank you so much for caring for them so well ... you are a star!

I look forward to reading more about Princess and Kitty and their progress in your very kind hands.

Thanks - I am so pleased to have gotten hold of them - they needed some love and care.

They also have a thread in stories and on the rescues website if you want to follow their story.

Medically the steroids shot that my vet gave them has done nothing and I am trialling camrosa on their skin at the moment, for tonight they have stopped itching.

They have had micropore tape today Claire. Now they have less open wounds it's working - when they were puss and stuff they were still in agony micropore and all. But now it's a bit better.

Thank you!
