I have just lined the pigs hutches with lino (stuck securely down!) and just added lots of bedding on top for absorbancy and lots of hay. I'm really hoping this will prevent me having to use newspapers which are a nightmare to dispose of!

But I'll have to wait & see whether it works! anyone else tried this?

i have lino and newspaper on the bottom of hutches. The lino even with woodshavings on can be a bit slippy

I just have lino down on my rabbits wendyhouse... they finally litter trained on it as they HATE peeing on lino and will now only go in the litter tray... It is a dream to clean... i simply sweep all the poos off the lino and any splatter poos (ones they havent eaten) i scrape up with an old wallpaper stripper... hey presto clean as a whistle...
I do give them something warm to sit on though as lino is cold... and if they do pee on it is is easily wipeable!

Only thing is it wont absorb wee so if your piggies wee everywhere then they will be walking in the puddles rather than soggy newspaper which may give them urine scalds? Depends on how much you clean them out i suppose... :)

ello - I have had some lino for ages now to go into the girls hutch, but i've been putting off using it as i'm not sure what to use to stick it down with? Is lino glue ok is that toxic to piggies etc?

Cheers

ooohhh id not thought about using lino it sound a fab idea how do you stick it down ? do you just put hay on top ?

I bought the vinyl tiles from b and q £1.90 i think for 6 tiles... 2 boxes did 5ftx5ft... and you can cut them with a craft knife... O0... they have self adhesive backing as well so no need for glue!

Clare get us pictures when you stick vinyl all over your sofa... ;D

I want to see the lino sofa too!!! 2funny

So far it's been going well, they have tons and tons of bedding down, and its done a good job of soaking up pee. The pigs for the most part pee in the corners of their hutch, so I just pile up the bedding & make it thick there.

Oh thats good news Starla O0

I tell you lino is the way to go!

CLare i have heard of vinyl sofas but i think yours might be a tad off the mark... ;D

Lino works well in the hutches as long as you give it a thorough clean every now and then with vinegar disolved in hot water or even bleach in hot water. That gets rid of the dry urine scald.
You need something though to "soak" up the urine in the hutch.....on lino the piggies just leave puddles and then they walk back over them all the time.....makes for a nice smelly pig with potential sore feet and belly!

You could use a cotton sheet as a base to absorb, then you can add the bedding and hay and at the end of the cycle you can take the sheet out with all the stuff in it and shake it into the compost or where-ever you discard the bedding and hay to! Sheet can be washed!

I have lino with no newspaper down and the piggies hav eaten half of it which isnt good - although i think i is really good if it were to be used with newspaper - i need to replace mine now as ive had mine a few months or so

I have lino in the hutch in the shed and lino squares in the outside hutch!
Its great saves the wood from rotting! O0 O0 O0

yep using a sheet or maybe towels could be a good idea. I clean them out quite regularly though, and I am happy to do it even more now I don't have to worry about newspaper.

I would put paper down for piggies... i dont for the buns because htey pee on newspaper and in a big wendyhouse it is much easier to sweep and scrape than mop!

yep I have started to put newspaper down again, as the pee was not being absorbed enough and it was getting smelly! but the lino is definately protecting the hutches
