Is it common for both guinea pigs have UTI the same time? Carson was diagnosed with UTI yesterday. Bodie this morning is exhibiting some symptoms like Carson had on Sunday.

Hi

Have they had lawn time recently?

Do you think maybe something external that they've had different could cause them both to have one at the same time? Any different forage or veg amounts/type? Water? New nuggets or a change in nugget ingredients?🤔

We haven't changed anything at all. Obviously it's just hay that gets changed every 8 weeks. We can't change anything we give them as we are sticking to Carson's diet because of his diabetes. They've been to boarders for 3 weeks but that was early March. We've had piggies in the past that had UTI but this is the first time we have both piggies at the same time.

Unfortunately, unless it is an event where both have had a cold and/or wet bum for some reason, you will have to assume that one of them has picked up the bacteria from the other.

Many healthy piggies can fend off/control UTI or sterile cystitis with their immune system but if that is not the case, then it can pass on without external cause, similar to URI.

I hope that it is UTI and that the antibiotic will do the trick.

Thank you Wiebke. Fingers crossed the antibiotic would solve it. We've only found out that Carson has UTI when we took him to the vet (after noticing a drop in his weight and sulking and not eating) and had his pee tested, resulting with blood in pee. After just a full day of antibiotic and loxicom, he is perkier today and wheeking for food. I think the Loxicom has helped with any pain he is feeling. I haven't seen any visible blood on the bedding today, unlike yesterday. His weight is down to 1021g this morning but he is showing interest on his food again today.

In case of Bodie, he started eating a couple of hours after giving Loxicom and antibiotic, so any pain must've been relieved.

Just an update:

Both Carson and Bodie are done with the antibiotics. I tested their pee with a dipstick and both don't have blood in their pee anymore. 👍👍

Bodie has been back to normal since day 2 of the meds and he's back to his normal weight (1370-1390g) and has been eating nonstop! He's going to explode soon! 😂😂

Carson's appetite though is up and down at the moment. We are still giving him CC every now and again, but there will be times, especially at night that he is eating a lot. He weighed 1025g this morning though so he is not fully there yet and can't maintain his weight yet. Hopefully we can get his weight back up. He is a happy piggy though as he is running around and popcorning at times. He also asks and wheeks for food but then would sniff some and then won't eat. But atleast he is eating hay and drinking water. Not eating pellets yet though.

Glad they are over the UTIs. Hopefully Carson’s weight will slowly start to increase.
