Hi so my male guinepig has suspected uti , he’s got blood in his wee and also just coming out of his general private area ,

He’s now been to the vets twice ! He was put on metacam for a week with antibiotics as the course ended he started to gradually get worse ! I then took him back to the vets again .. they again did a good check & prescribed Metacam for over a week , he’s passing urine and pooping , and he’s drinking water but eating now and again !

Has anyone else had this issue and had metacam worked to clear the infection ? He’s very bright and bubbly piggy and he’s still like that now I’m just concerned if I’ve got the right stuff for him ?

I’m sorry to hear he is unwell.

Metacam is a painkiller and anti inflammatory so while it absolutely will help him, if he has a bacterial infection then Metacam isn’t the thing that will treat it. A course of antibiotics is needed to cure a bacterial urinary infection and usually the course needs to be for 10 days (sometimes longer).

The alternative potential diagnosis, but only if antibiotic courses fail to treat the symptoms and all other issues (such as sludge and stones) are ruled out, is sterile cystitis able to be diagnosed.
Should a piggy be diagnosed with sterile cystitis then glucosamine and Metacam is the treatment.
But, you need to know the correct length course of antibiotics has been tried and failed and other avenues ruled out before looking to a sterile cystitis diagnosis. Sterile cystitis is becoming more common than bacterial infections but not may vets know about it if they don’t see piggies regularly

We would also recommend you switch to daily weight checks so you can more closely monitor his hay intake and prepare to step in with support feeding. If he isn’t eating hay then he will lose weight quickly and you will need to support him while he is unwell

I hope he is ok
