UTI question

I am not sure if blood would show up in a urine test every time the pig peed. However I have found that even pigs with quite strong UTIs (bright red urine, strongly tinged with blood) don't have red pee every single time they urinate. The short answer would be no, but the scientific answer concerning values in urine tests is not something I've discovered yet!

Are you still worried about sweet Eliza? How is she doing?

Thanks Laura. Yes I'm still worried about Eliza as sometimes her urine is a stronger red / orange coour than it is at other times. At the minute, her urine is really red / orange where as it wasn't that bad over the weekend :( At one point, it looked like blood on the side of the pigloo but when I wiped it and it dried, it was rusty orange. The urine itself though is still coming out milky / clear and turning that colour once out of the body. The problem is that it has turned in to an obsession and I find myself constantly cheaking her urine so any slight change panics me :(

Oh Claire, I'm sorry to hear this - can't really give you any advice but I do hope Eliza will be ok xx

I found that not all pees are "bloody"in a UTI; there are normal coloured ones in between as well.

I find that apart from red stains, bright yellow tinged hay, where it has been peed on, and a very distinctive stale smell are the other two signs that give me a home diagnosis for an acute bout of UTI.

This is the problem i have with Eliza. Because her urine is a rusty colour, I am never sure if it has blood in it. Therefore whenever there is a slight change, I begin ti panic :( I haven't noticed yellow hay and her urine smells normal. The urine does leave redish stains but it has done for a while now even when no blood has been present in the urine and she had her x ray :(

In an acute bout of UTI, you can't miss the smell - and you will recognise it immediately after Connie!

As I have said before, the red stain doesn't necessarily come from the bladder. Nor has the intensity of oxidisation anything to do with the presence of blood!

With your obsessing over Eliza you're not helping her!

Sorry to hear you are still so worried about Eliza. Its only natural after what you have been through. I worry lots about my Mimsi (my boar with the bladder stone). I keep him on vet bed permanently now so its easier for me to spot if he is bleeding. (he hasnt bled at all since March) I'm sure Eliza is fine but I know how worried you are.

I think after all Claire went through with Connie, it's only natural that she is concerned about Eliza.

Just keep a close eye on her Claire. I'm sure all is fine, but it's always good to be vigilent so things can be caught quickly.

You will not always get blood in the urine at such a level as to be visible to the naked eye, however, it may be present but only detectable by a urine test.

I'm going to ask a probable stupid question but can g.p.'s have nephritis also known as thin lining disease (kidneys)?

This causes blood to be present in urine, not seen by the naked eye but seen on a dipstick test - it causes no other problems. The lining of the kidneys is thinner & allows blood to pass thru' :)
