Hi
Just wondering if anyone knows what causes UTIs in guineas? My piggie had blood in her urine in sept so we took her to the vets. She had an x-ray and tests and nothing was found, so we were given a weeks worth of antibiotics and it seemed to work as there were no more signs of blood until a few days ago.
I read somewhere putting cranberry juice in the water helps.....

Thanks in advance

UTI's are often caused by bacterial infections, so they will respond to antibiotics if that is the cause. It is a wise move as you have done to get an X-ray performed as this will rule out bladder stones.
Some UTI's can be stubborn so if the symptoms have come back it is worth a vets visit to get some more antibiotics, the antibiotic Septrin is widely regarded as a better choice to treat UTI's. If the last UTI was in September it's entirely possible she may have another now...
It may be worth asking your vet to culture a sample or urine so you can she if it is a bacterial infection causing the problem.

Cranberry juice unsweetened helps soothe the bladder and if you increase the piggies water intake this will help flush things through. Hope your little girl feels better soon

Thank you for your reply, I will contact the vet and hopefully get it cleared up again x

A UTI is caused by bacteria entering into the bladder. Unfortunately some animals (and people) are more prone to it than others. From what I've read, since guinea pigs are low to the ground and sometimes bedding is not totally dry, it makes it easy for them to get UTIs. Sometimes there are underlying things predisposing them to this problem, like bladder stones. Sometimes there aren't, though. I've been struggling with UTIs with my girls since the early fall- Linney had a UTI in September, and Sundae was just diagnosed with one yesterday. One thing I have noticed is that I changed bedding brands in August and since then each pig has ended up with an infection. You can bet I am switching back to my old brand! Hope your piggie feels better soon!
