Hi,
I have a boar, who is 4 years old, last week I noticed he was weeking whilst having a week, I took him to the vets and it was diagnosed that he has a UTI (I took a sample so she could test it). He was prescribed marbocyl and metacam, he seemed to get better but today he has a slight showing of pinkness in his wee, he is eating fine and his stools are fine.
Is there anything else I can do till my vet opens on Tuesday? Can he have Cranberry juice or are their foods that crystallise the urine?
Thanks for your help

Keep giving him the metacam, will help with any pain and inflamation. Any noises when weeing? A little unsweetened cranberry juice wont hurt in the meantime till tuesday apt at vets. Always happens when vets are closed. if it gets worse or he goes downhill then you'll have to do emergency vets unfortunately. Sending healing vibes x

Is he still on medication? Then please continue. See an emergency vet if there is a quick and sudden deterioration (potential bladder stone) in the interim.

If symptoms are not going down after a double course of antibiotic or his state worsens while on antibiotics, I would strongly recommend a scan or x-ray to check for stones/bladder sludge. This is generally he second step for guinea pigs with your symptoms where symptoms do not go away, get worse or recur after the end of the medical course.
UTI, IC (interstitial cystitis, a recurring inflammation of the bladder walls that does not react much to antibiotics) and bladder stones can cause all the same symptoms. UTI being the the most frequent and easiest to deal with is usually treated for first.

IC is currently a default diagnosis only after all other potential avenues have been eliminated. It has become a lot more common in the last decade but is currently not curable. It is going away on its own eventually and it doesn't cause bladder stones but you are stuck with acute bladder episodes every few months for several years.

Thank you for your replies, I think I'm just impatient as he has only been on meds since Wednesday. He is not weeking as much as he was so he probably is on the mend. He has enough meds till Tuesday and then we will go back. He is busy tucking into a big bowl watery veggies. Once again, thank you for your replies.

It’s good that you have a follow up appointment. Please remember to take a sample with you (if you can) somit can be tested again. Sometimes it can take a longer course of ABs and Metacam to kill the infection and relieve the pain on weeing if it is a bad UTI. Just keep up with the meds and hopefully he will continue to improve.

Might be worth asking your vet to check the willy for a sperm rod! They can cause pain when weeing

UTIs can often take a week or longer to get on top of. Mine have usually needed a 3 week course of septrin.

The vat checked his winkie for rods, all was ok. Ive syringed him some water tonight to get more fluids in him, I'm hoping it will flush it through. Thank you for your comments, it is very much appreciated.
