Anyone have this same experience..my pig started having bloody urine Weds night so I brought him into the emergency vet and they prescribed Enrofloxacin for 2 weeks and Metacam for 1 week. I am wondering if he needs to be on the pain meds the whole course. Also, has anybody given their guineas probiotics? How much and often? Thank you for any advice!

@Tamijo777 Being on Metacam for a week won't harm. It's also an anti-flammatory.

Probiotics are good to use in case of antibiotics intolerance. Which one to use depends on where you live. If you could update that then we may be able to give you options. If you're unsure ask your vet for some and the dosage.

You can give a pinch of probiotics either 1 hour before the antibiotic (US recommendation) or 1-2 hours after the antibiotic (UK recommendation). There is quite a range of brands.

Enroflaxacin, better known under the brand name baytril, is still the only officially licensed antibiotic for guinea pigs although others have been increasingly used over the last decade. It may need more than once course.
Metacam is both a painkiller and an anti-inflammatory.

Please contact your vet again if symptoms have not started to ease by the end of the week or if he getting worse despite the medication. There are several urinary tract related issues that present with the same symptoms.
