I have a rescue guinea, who has been with me for 3weeks, he has been diagnosed with a uti (blood in his urine quite a lot). He is on metacam for 3-5 days. He is OK in himself. We have separated him from his bonded mate by wire mesh as his mate mounts him all the time, - is this the right thing to do? Also can he go out on the grass? Thanks

Please be aware that UTI is a bacterial urine infection caused in by faecal bacteria getting into the urinary tract. It will need an antibiotic to treat. How piggy savvy is your vet and have they checked for the potential of stones?
There are a number of urinary tract issues that present with the same symptoms. Your vet will treat in the order of how common and easily curable they are:
1) UTI - bacterial urine infection. Requires a course of antibiotic and ideally an anti-inflammatory/painkiller like metacam, too.
2) If symptoms persist, get worse or return after treatment: Your vet needs to check for bladder/kidney stones or sludge with a scan or x-ray.
3) interstitical cystitis (IC), a non-bacterial inflammation of the bladder walls that cannot be healed by an antibiotic: if there are no stones but your piggy is suffering from acute episodes every few weeks your vet might diagnose IC by default. It is usually managed (but not healed) with metacam as we do not yet know what is causing it.
I took him to the out of hours vet so not sure about her knowledge. He has a follow up on Tues with my vet, so will monitor and take earlier if worsens. Do you know if he can go out on the grass? At the moment I have put him outside in a cage next to his mate who is in the run. Thank you
