We have a vet appointment in an hour !

My 6 month old boar seems to be having some wee issues.

this morning I noticed a rust color where he normally pees. So I have him on a towel and he urinates there. It seems to come out clear, but soon darkens brown and even has stained his back leg. He doesn’t seem to be in any discomfort when touched or peeing. But now I’m worried !

he just got off of doxycycline for a URI.

Hi!

If the pee is clear, then you are dealing with strong oxidisation; this is not a UTI where you typically get intensely red porphyrine pees that come out already red and that may or may not contain blood - but they very much look like your piggy is peeing blood.

Oxidisation (discolouring when in contact with air) always happens to some degree or other unless your urine is very watery. Your oxidisation is not so strong that you need to be worried; that is a very normal strength and nowhere near the intensity you sometimes see in recovering piggies after a prolonged UTI/bladder issues battle.

Oxidisation (discolouring when in contact with air) always happens to some degree or other unless your urine is very watery. It can be stronger in the wake of an illness and a weakened immune system because bacteria that are always present in the bladder can flourish more when they are not kept fully under control. However this usually corrects itself during recovery.
And the staining on his back legs ?

Is the same - just from pee. Please take a deep breath - the colour is still mild and well within a normal range that you can see in healthy piggies.

It’s just a lot ! I’ve seen it before in patches, but it seems like everytime he urinates.
Luckily we had a vet appointment to recheck his URI anyways, so I can stop even more from freaking out ! I’m just dealing with bloat too, so just a handful of pigssues

It can be just that his immune system is a bit suppressed so the bacteria that are always present in the bladder are not kept under control as well as normally. The discolouration is still very much in the normal range and not the kind of intensity that you see when the bacteria are taking over, so please take heart and take a deep breath.
Like the bloat, it is most likely a secondary complication rather than another illness; and a very mild one at that. ;)

Holding you in my thoughts as you cope with all these issues.

Got the a okay on the urine. I was worried because he was drinking SO MUCH. But, turns out his water bottle was leaking constantly. And SOAKED the fleece!

but now I’m even more worried, my other male who maintained his weight on the antibiotics is now losing it. He now weighs 780 grams from 815 while on antibiotics ?

What time period is that weight loss over.
It isn't a huge loss if it is spread over a week or so.
30 g can be the difference between a full and empty bladder!

Do you weigh at the same time each week?
Do keep an eye on it, but if he has finished the antibiotics then it might just be a matter of waiting a week or so and seeing if he puts the weight back on.

hes been off antibiotics. And this weight loss started about 3 days ago or so. We weigh before breakfast. Sometimes I even wake him up!
it was just so hard for him to get over 800, he’s always been a smaller pig, so it’s just worrisome. The vet visit before the treatment he was 830 g. But they weighed him after breakfast and all the goodies. Then maintained at 815. And now dropped once more.

but I have noticed he’s a lot more active. Back to his crazy selfs with all kinds of Zoomies.

I thought that your vet wouldn't find any issue with the urine.
Blood has different specific weight to urine and doesn't mix when it dries, so you see it usually as red/pink dots in the middle of a drying orange/rusty pee puddle or as a reddish/pink ring on the outside of a puddle if there is a lot - but if the latter was the case, you'd also have some other clear symptoms! A pee puddle all in the same orange/rusty tone is nothing to worry about; that is just normal oxidisation.

The difference between a full or empty bladder is around 10g; the difference between a full and empty gut is another 30g. We only speak of weight loss of 50g for that reason. Please don't panic. A little weight loss can happen during treatment and is easily caught up once your boy is fully recovered. As long as your boy is normal and happy in himself; he should normalise in himself.
You only need to step in with syringe feeding top up (offering mushed up pellets additionally as much as he wants to eat) or full syringe feeding if the trend continues or your boy is losing his appetite altogether.
Weight - Monitoring and Management

Please add a pinch of probiotics per piggy to their food or dissolve it in 1 ml of water and syringe either 1 hour before the antibiotic (US recommendation) or 2 hours after the antibiotic (UK recommendation) to support the gut. Either method works as well as any of the others. As both boys are on antibiotics, poo soup is not possible for you right now.

Hi! I have answered on your other thread. Please do not cross post. Or just start one thread if you have more than one piggy treated for the same problem; otherwise it gets confusing.
