vacuum cleaner crisis!

Hi, well i have a cylinder vacuum cleaner (not an upright one, one that drags around behind you- idont know what they are called!). the problem i have is that hay gets absolutely everywhere in our house. I have tried sweeping it up but it takes forever cos it gets stuck to the carpet but every time i hoover it blocks all the tubes in the hoover and then it won't pick up! I was just wondering whether anyone else has his problem? What sort of cleaners does everyone use and which one would you say was the best for this sort of thing? i am going to have to come up with something cos my OH (who does all the hoovering) is on the verge of giving up doing it and i am NOT letting him gettin away with it! Please help!!

They're called pull-along vacuum cleaners and I wouldn't have anything else. i hate the uprights because I am vertically challenged (5ft 2) and find them extremely difficult to manoeuvre - even my mother in law's Dyson which I have used to clean the car. Another reason why I don't like them, they don't fit in the car whereas the pull-alongs do.

I do experience some difficulty with the hay but find that if I use the metal hose only to pick up the larger bits, it's often better. Make sure to put the rectangular attachment -bit thing at the bottom on the brush position too as it will lift more particles, especially on carpets.

If succion is an issue, you may need to clear your filter which is inside the cylinder. It's a dirty task and you will end up covered in dust but your vacuum cleaner will feel like new! and will be cheaper than buying new!

I have the same problem with my cylinder and have to clean it out lots but it is next on my list of things to replace so will be going for a pet dyson I think, but still a cylinder type!
 
it works ok with the rectangle bit for a while but then stops working cos it gets clogged! the other day i had to take apart all the hoses and clear them all out cos they were blocked up! its not an old hoover either i bought it new when we moved in at the end of july! might try cleaning the filter cos that is one thing i havent actually done yet. thanks for all your help guys!
 
i'm pretty new to the whole domestic thing, i only moved out of home in july and so everything is a bit of a challenge i was so used to mummy doing everything for me lol i only found out yesterday that i am meant to spin the washing before putting it in the dryer...santa didnt mention that when he brought me the tumble dryer!

Doesnt the washing machine have a spin cycle on the end of the wash cycle? Most do it automaticly
 
well apparently not at the end of every cycle which is what i didnt realise! if its on a long wash it does spin it but i quite often put it on a quick wash which doesnt have a sping function in the cycle! think i need an idiots guide to moving out of home!
 
I ruined two (cheap) uprights this year with hay, but bought a more expensive (still upright) which was better. However, my vet nurse, from whom I had my piggies, absolutely swears by her Henry - and they use that at work too.

I agree. Most schools and other large places will provide their cleaning staff with henry hoovers as they are sturdy and long lasting.
 
I couldn't survive without my Dyson! There are a lot of piggies here and a lot of hay but he sucks it all up beautifully!
 
I have a cylinder pull along and i suck up all the hay (apart from the really long and thick bits) with it. After a while i find i cant suck anything up...:))

THEN i pull off the hoover nozzle, find the hay all packed in, get a pair of long scissors, pull out the wodge of hay and dust and dispose of it either up the tube (it doesnt get stuck once its impacted) or dump it in the bin...

Then i start all over again! :))
 
I have a very cheap £19.99 daewoo cylinder vacuum that I use just in my piggy room. Use just the hose bit and it's great. Has lasted for ages. Much better than risking an expensive machine. Probably more hygienic too. xx Would love a pink henrietta though!
 
We swear by our dysons too. We have 3. Greedy I know but each for various areas. 1 upstairs, 1 downstairs both of these are uprights and 1 cyclinder for the car.
 
I have a pet dyson too they are great it's also the cylinder version, I hate uprights they are not as practical and take up more space, when we brought ours we also brought an extra sponge filter as they still do clog up with dust and you do loose some suction. When it becomes dirty we put the sponge in the washing machine and scrub the plastic bit then theres always a spare I hoover at least once a day with my messy lot!
