Advice required please...rarely do I start a new thread so you know I mean business.

Bloss - 4yrs old, female
Symptoms: skin by her undercarriage was swollen, red, open sores. Happened very quickly.
Vet visit result: baytril 0.2ml twice daily. I cleaned, dried and nappy cream on area daily, plus probiotic and cranberry. Quarantined and placed on fleece.

Back to vets tonight, stopped baytril. She's a little better but now crying when wees and poos. Tonight blood in wee. Vet thinks she's either got vaginal infection or her skin is burnt due to sitting in urine. My girls are clean, bedding is auboise, good diet, and soft fleece zones in cage also.
Had a couple of injections and being treated with camomile lotion now.
I've searched the forum so please don't shoot me down. Would like any advice, if I don't reply to every post, bear with me I'm a little distressed with her sudden illness.8...
Thanks all:...

Vaginal infection or urinary tract infection?

Where abouts are you located? Someone may be able to suggest a recommended vet for you to visit

Aw, poor Bloss - it does sound more like a UTI/Cystitis, is she arching her back when she cries :(
Septrin maybe the better medication for her so would speak to your vet again or seek another opinion.
Sending healing vibes to Bloss from us all here x>>

oh bless you hun, that does sound very painful for the poor girl. If it is red, swollen and burnt then no doubt it would hurt when she pee's/poo's. Have you not been given antiinflammatories for the pain/swelling?

I'm near Lichfield in staffs, vet reckons its either vaginal infection or urine burns, I think it's more than one..one thing leads to another sort of thing. My vets are straitons in rugeley. I've looked before for a more cavy savvy vet, my search continues.
She's had the camomile lotion tonight so will be interesting how the skin clears up, but clearly more going on. Should I give it a day of so and see how she reacts to her treatment?
She's an amazing piggy and her sister is missing her terribly, almost mourning...
It's all about the pigs for me x

Yes, i agree, vaginal infection or urinary tract infection. And it sounds like she has urine scolding on her underside. Placing her onto a softer bedding like vetbed would be more advisable and would help. She may also have some degree of arthiritis (as she isnt moving away from her wee) so may be better on a bit of pain relief too. If the baytril has not helped then a course of septrin is much better for UTI's. Please pop back to your vet, get them to check her bladder for stones by feeling and if worried take a quick conscious xray. (or do this after the course of septrin). For now make sure her underside is clean and dry and place a barrier cream or spray on such as sudocream, vasaline or cavlon?

I hope she starts feeling better soon.

Edit: i see you have already put her on fleece. sorry

Thanks guys, yes I was thinking septrin also. Her swelling has gone down a bit but vet was reluctant about septrin, I might have to insist.
When she's had cystitis before I can tell but I know this is more. Expect the cranberry to help. She doesn't want to take water so putting probiotic in the cranberry and she's happy with that.

Cranberry will ease her symptoms a little. Unfortunatly some vets dont like to give out septrin as it isnt licenced for use in piggies and some worry about it. I would do as you say and insist. Its a much better antibiotic for bladder issues.

we have a few staffs members on here so hoping someone can recommend a vet close to you who is cavy savvy. I have one just round the corner but Leicester is a trek for you. There is a thread on here with recommended vets its worth going through

this is the thread I meant, it takes some going through or you can contact a local rescue and see who they use (that's how I found mine)

Thank you so much...guess I needed to sound out what I was thinking, I'll go back and push for septrin and some pain relief, it's good to process it all.
Appreciate it, bloss is currently snuggled up with me getting lots of love especially as she's not getting her normal attention from her sisters.

Just wanted to ask if the vet has definitely checked for/ruled out a stone partially blocking the urethra?

If not, I would suggest you ask them to do so when you go back for the next lot of antibiotics as often urinary infections (and I'm also thinking here of the swollen tissue in particular ) can be secondary to a partial blockage of the urethra with a stone/grit/ (or in the case of un-neutered boars, boar glue!)

Hi everyone, thanks for the usual replies,

Ok, change in vet. Whilst my daily bathing and Caroline lotions is helping with the scolding, we believe she has both bladder infection and possible stone. She was given an anti nflamatory shot today, and I've come away with mar coyl , sorry but iPad hates new words!

To diagnose for sure, vet has said she needs X-ray and ultra sound....eek, does the cost of £140 sound right? Any idea what the cost of a operation to remove stone as I suspect it is.

This is a whole new area for me. She's also on the rescue food, although she happy taking cranberry juice, and eating as normal. Shes still squeaking when toileting, is arching at the end of that, and is still in quarantine.

Thanks in advance.
