So it looks like we're back to the vets soon for the girls, baytril is just as useless as ever so I don't want to waste more money on it.

Does anyone know of any other antibiotic/treatment for vaginitis? We were on the baytril for 3 weeks and I feel like I might as well have syringed all four of them water twice daily.

Now I'm really testing my memory here, but I think there's another antibiotic called Septrin? Although I have to say it wasn't prescribed for the same condition.

septrin is another antibiotic to try.maybe some swabs can be sent to see what antibiotics are sensitive to the bacteria ? x

Yes Iggy had septrin for his cystitis which worked a treat (thanks to Simon & Kim!) but I too wasn't sure if it could be used for this.

Swabs might be an idea, I know it's quite expensive but I'd rather that than waste more money on baytril!

Thanks guys, might suggest these things to my vet. I know they don't really like using other antibiotics but I hope they'll start as I can't keep going to Northampton!

Do you mean urinary tract infection or pyometra (infection of the womb lining)? Guinea pigs do not have vaginitis.

If your guinea pigs do not react to baytril at all, you can either test for the bacteria (there are more resistent strains around these days) or see whether you are dealing with interstitial cystitis.

Oh. What could it be that all 4 girls have shown symptoms? It's like a brownish smelly discharge but they've never had any problems peeing.

I would recommend to have it tested to see what it is. It doesn't sound like your run of the mill thing so there is not necessarily a run of the mill standard answer; but it is obviously infectious and most likely transmitted via sitting on soiled bedding (something that is impossible to prevent). :(

Yea I think I'll have to look into testing it, this is the first time I've heard that they don't get infections like that so now I don't know. My vets are normally pretty good with diagnostics and I even did a bit of online research.

I guess we'll have to opt for that, fingers crossed it's not too expensive, spending too much time at vets! :))

Would would the symptoms sound right for that? I just wanna be prepared for when I go back to the vets as I want this sorted asap.

I wish I lived in Northampton :))

We're going to the vets in a few hours, can anyone make suggestions to treatment options? Just trying to be prepared :)

I would've thought itrafungal would be an appropriate medication. Hopefully your vet will know.

Thanks! I'll ask about that. Hopefully, they do try but I fear that due to them being a general vet rather than a specialist that they'll just suggest more baytril which I'm not willing to try again.
