Hi there,

I adopted two four year old girl piggies about four months ago. When I first got them I introduced a new veg every day so that I would know if anything upset their tummies.

after a while they were eating brocolli, cabbage, parsley, kale, carrots, carrot tops, pak choi, and peppers. There were a few things they didn't take too like runner beans, mangetout and baby corn.

In the evening they have romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, celery (chopped very finely and cucumber.

WELL the fussy little pigs have decided after months of eating all these foods that they now only will eat sweetheart cabbage in the mornings. They still love their salad but have stopped eating the cherry tomatoes and they will only eat the very small sweet orange peppers not red or green which they lapped up to start with.

has anyone any ideas why they have decided to all of a sudden become fussy?

You may of been giving them more of that than anything else maybe and just got bored of it ;D ;D They are like us really and like different varieties and some times can get sick of having different foods thrown at them or even not being given differnt foods but it may be just that they are getting fussy for no apparent reason :D :D

Yeah I agree with ILA mine have gotten bored with the same foods so I rotate it as best I can, I've done this weeks shopping list I'll put it here, I give six diffferent vegs a day broke up with 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening, I know some people give 6 veg but I've 5 guineas and at the mo my budget can't stretch that far but they seem to be ok on that, here's my shopping list for this week, maybe you can get some ideas. :)
This is for my 5. If Brocolli is too expensive I substitue with Cabbage, all depends on the bargins in Lidl and Aldi.

Romaine - 15 large leaf/30 smaller leaves
Cherry tomato - 13
Bell pepper - green - 3 1/8 per portion
Bell pepper - yellow - 3 1/8 per portion
Carrot - 20 baby carrot/pinky finger sized chunk
Cucumber - 15/12" chunk (5 cucumbers)
Round lettuce - 30 leaves
Celery - 2" piece chopped ( lot)
Bell pepper - red - 2
Curly lettuce - (endive) 15 - 20 leaves
Curly Kale - 20 small pieces chopped
Broccoli - 5 branchlet
Mixed leaves (from bag) - 5 handful
Celery - 2" piece chopped
Parsley - 10 sprigs

Many thanks for your replies girls. It is very strange that they seem to have got bored, they had no vegetables before and scoffed everything I gave them. Now they will touch nothing but the cabbage in the morning! When they stopped eating the kale and broccoli I didn't give it to them for a week but they still turned up their little noses!

They still love their salad in the evening but haven't eaten a cherry tomato for weeks despite the fact they they went potty over them to start with.

I did rotate the vegatables so that they had something different every day but they now leave everything but the cabbage!

sorry if that is all abit scrambled! LOL

Hi Kaz,

They are funny little things. I introduced veggies slowly too. Sunshine was a house pig at first and he went mad for an apple when my daughter came in eating one! Now he won't touch them, I think because he has tasted greens etc that he prefers them!

Hi louise,

I have never had guinea pigs before and cannot get over what little characters they are. I went out of my way to provide them with nothing but the best, even providing organic but the thing they love the best is the grass and that is free! LOL

they both love apple, think i will have to play it by ear and re-introduce the veg one at a time over the new few months, they have even left the cabbage today but have eaten the parsley that they wouldn't eat last week!

Hi Kaz,

It's a learning curve. I've never had guineas before, so sad I never discovered them when I was a teenager. My ma wouldn't let me have any I guess, she is too houseproud! She says my house is like a zoo!...ROFL

I give three veggies in the morning and three in the afternoon, just remember that if they like something they may get fed up with it. I fid lidl and aldi great for food. :)

Love the picture of Twinkle she is so cute, my son who is Bridget and Mollys real owner has just helped me put a mug shot of them on the computer, think we will have guinea pigs for life now!

Yes it is indeed a learning curve! I have just sent off for two books, one by Peter Gurney and the other the guineapiglopedia, hoping to get lots of tips from there. Thanks for all your help, much appreciated x :smitten:
