Is the weekly veggie bill getting you down? :{ Do your guinea pigs seem to polish of mountains of veg in minutes?:o Why not try growing your own? :^-

Its really easy to grow carrots in pots and you can sow the seeds every two weeks for a continuous supply. You don't need green fingers, just some pots full of compost, some carrot seeds and perhaps a little bit of watering (if we ever have a dry spell!) Its really not hard to do and the pigs love it! You don't need tons of space or a massive garden or allotment - just try it!

Also if you are feeling a little more adventerous try growing your own parsley or basil. You can grow it in pots on your kitchen window - takes a little bit more care than the carrots but worth it as a tasty treat!

Anyone else gornw their own?

No not at all! I get all our veg from a local stall is its literally pence for the stuff so my boys get their greens very cheap!

Thats brilliant! I bet you're thrilled to have that local stall! Still worth scattering a few seeds in case you run out and don't manage to get to stall that day :)

i grow carrot tops...
i tryed to grow carrots but i managed to kill them...
i buy the livivng lettuces and keep the bottom part of it to regrow...
along with going to my local green grocers and i get a big bag of off cuts for them....
reduced veg from the shops...
but I'm just stingey like that... :))

Ive starting growing lettuce, tomatoes, carrots and green beans!

Onions and chilli peppers too but not for the pigs obviously! :p

I grow carrots, dill, thyme, parsley, endive and spinach - thats just in the back garden - still have the front garden to sort out - eeeek!

Yay! Its great to hear that other piggie owners grow veggies too! Its dead easy and even if the carrots don't turn out they do so love the carrot tops :P Yummy!

And I dont call that being stingy claremw92! Its being sensible! I got several bags of packed salad today that the shop was throwing out. Society is so wasteful! Its shocking!

What else is good to grow in pots - do you know?

I'd love to grow my pigs some veggies, but they've already taken over so much of the garden I'm not sure mum would allow me to have a vegetable patch, too! We did grow them some parsley once...once. They managed to finish it off very quickly and it didn't grow again :))

Oh yes - parsley, 3 kinds of cabbage, kale and lettuce so far. My carrots sadly didn't take though. Problem is, when they hear the back door opening, they know the veggies are out there and you can guess what happens! (Earplugs please!)

I planted spinach, parsley, coriander and lettuce in pots in my conservatory. The parsley and spinach grew but the others didn't.
Just planted some more yesterday so fingers crossed it works.
I just chucked some seeds in a pot and water them when it feels dry and then keep my fingers crossed! I'm not at all green fingered!

I grow lettuce (saved me a fortune, as the good quality variety packs are about £1.50 and I usually waste alot as it doesn't keep that well), basil, parsley, beetroot, kale (VERY easy, and it grows so fast), tomatoes (not so easy without a greenhouse), and carrots (although the snails ate them 8...!)

I grew parsley, coriander, butterhead lettuce, carrots, parsnips, sunflowers, cabbages and Brussel sprouts this year. :) Well the parsnips and carrots and Brussel sprouts are still growing, but going well, the others went well. :)

I got cabbage plants, instead of seeds, which I found worked really well and didn't cost extra and they grew fast, so in future I think I'll get plants of some things, and seeds of other things.

I also get the pots of herbs in supermarkets and plant those and they grow great. :)

Oh I also grew rocket, but there were so many weeds in the veggie patch that when I was weeding I kept picking the rocket, so I just kept doing that cos it was easier and I was feeding the weeds to the piggies anyway. It was really handy that the weeds were all edible ones, except the odd buttercup leaf that I just avoided :)

I can spend up to £20 some weeks buying fresh fruit and veg. I always try to buy the reduced stuff to save money. My wife is on the waiting list for an allotment, i'll pinch a corner to grow some piggy food. ;)

Wow! Its great that so many of you grow pots of veggies - it really does help to cut the cost down - especially this time of year when everything is growing. I am going to try some of the things you all grow :) Ouch! Highway Man! Thats quite a bit of money on fresh veggies for the piggies! Whilst you wait for the allotment why not start with seeds in pots? I hope you get that allotment soon!
