hello

where do you guys buy your veggies from? and how do you store them?

as you know we have 2 piggies and it is costing us a fortune on veggies for them, we seem to have to buy them at least twice a week as no matter why i keep them (pantry or fridge) they go off so fast and its costing between 5-10 pound a time

or am i just feeding them to much? they get a feeding dish full of veggies twice a day it all seems to go they dont leave any

hi, I buy mine from Tesco and they last about 8 days. I store them in the fridge, in the drawer at the bottom. I take them all out of there packets so they don't go soggy, I know it makes a bit of a mess in the drawer but I only use it for them anyway. I just buy Tesco value veggies also, don't have any probs with them and it keeps the costs down, but then I do have 38 to feed lol :))

I have 6 piggies (with 4 babies born today!....see my Shocked but Delighted thread in the pregnancy section) I buy veggies about twice a week. I buy from Tesco/Sainsburys depending on convenience. They don't last long (as in freshness or eaten-ness!)

I have 3 piggies (2 5month old boars and a 6+ year old female). I buy my veggies pretty much anywhere I am doing my shopping or happen to see something good (market, asda, tesco, allotment sales). I would say I spend around £10 a week on average.

Hoping once we move (in about 6 weeks time hopefully!), I will be helping my dad with his allotment and growing all our own things.

Lucy x

Having 18 piggies, we had to buy another fridge to store the veggies in so they have their own plus most of our space rolleyes
I buy fresh daily from Tesco as I work in there (but not for them :{ ) so can get great reductions at the end of the day - they know me as the mad piggy woman rolleyes :)) Gives me chance to buy them so many different veggies, there is also a lovely little veg shop a few minutes away so go in there too. Lovely big bunches of fresh beetroots for 99p which they love.
We shop for ourselves at Asda at weekends but still get stuff for the piggies so are always very well stocked up.
Does cost me a a fair bit per week but they deserve nice things - we don't drink or go out so all my earnings really go on them :(|)

I have 8 guinea pigs so I usually buy in bulk so either go to Makro or Costco but if we can't get there it will be Tesco, Asda or Morrisons
(Morrisons have good offers on at the mo big bags of spinach £1, kale £1, romaine lettuce 49p, big watermelon £2) :)

Fresh food

Hi I am lucky enough to live in the countryside so our ladies don't get a lot of veg but they do get a big bag full of fresh grass/ wild plants every day. I have checked out all the advice and they really love it, nothing is left. They do get hay as well. Hope I'm doing the right thing? Jo

I've only had mine since Sunday but so far I think I've spent around £10 on veggies and odd fruit. Been twice to the supermarket. Kept them in my draw in the fridge x

I don't really understand how veggies can be so dear unless you have been buying too much maybe & having to throw some away?

I buy my veggies every few days. For instance Co-op are doing three sweet peppers for £1, I got a coriander plant reduced in Tesco's for 25p & also a load of cherry tomatoes for 20p!

Add to that a reduced organic celery for 40p & all I have bought full price were carrots 50p & a sweetheart cabbage 80p.

Total cost for 3 piggies £3.35p :)) That lot will last them a good five days rolleyes

the difference with yours is that you are lucky enough to get some of it reduced but this person said that they have to have it delivered and you don't get the reduced items then which is a real shame

Cos I don't drive and have to get my shopping delivered and I do that about once a week so its whats easier for me

I buy mine from tesco, or use what I'm growing myself ! (:
Shopping once a week and all my veg stays fine in the fridge, never had an issue really, only ever with the reduced veg i get which occasionally goes off before the weeks out but thats to be expected.
The best thing is to not keep veg in the packets, this makes it go yucky ! it's perfectly fine just left in a compartment at the bottom of your fridge !

best thing to do in this case is look at the value range and go for them rather than high quality (like the best range or similar).

I am lucky in that I will be able to pop to the local shop and get the reduced stuff, I get veg in twice a week but in bits, as in not all of it at once so I have at least something they can have a choice of 3 veg from. I keep it all in the fridge at the bottom, out of bags and it lasts a while

I was referring to the original OP, they didn't mention buying stuff online I don't think?

It is difficult if you can't pop into shops on spec to buy stuff more cheaply. If that's not possible then I assume it's better to plan menus for both humans & piggies to save pennies. However for those having access to shops then if they are chucking stuff out they are buying a bit too much probably rolleyes
