hello

where do you guys buy your veggies from? and how do you store them?

as you know we have 2 piggies and it is costing us a fortune on veggies for them, we seem to have to buy them at least twice a week as no matter why i keep them (pantry or fridge) they go off so fast and its costing between 5-10 pound a time

or am i just feeding them to much? they get a feeding dish full of veggies twice a day it all seems to go they dont leave any

Hi!

- 80% of the daily food intake should be hay.
- Pellets (rather than muesli) should be given unlimited until the growth rate slows down between 5-9 months old and then very gradually reduced to the half to handful (40-50g) that an adult piggy needs.
- Vegetables should make about 50g/1 cupful per piggy per day in as many servings as you like. Ideally you feed a mix of veg. Make sure that you always include one high vitamin C veg like a slice of pepper of any colour, some broccoli (any part) or some fresh parsley; please vary between those three.
- Give fresh water daily. Please do not add anything; the piggies generally will drink less, you can't control the intake and the bottles go green in no time flat!

You will find that you need less veg, and that it therefore won't go off as quickly! You can also integrate more veg into your own meals - salads, oven roasted veg, stir fries, soups, pasta sauces, etc. to use veg more economically. Never feed frozen or defrosted veg; store the veg in the fridge or a cool pantry.

Here is a link to what veg they can eat: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=42

Please weigh your guinea pigs weekly to monitor their growth and spot any health problems early on. http://www.guinealynx.info/weigh.html

I agree with Wiebke. It sounds like you are feeding too much or you are getting really expensive veggies. Could you tell us how much of what you feed daily?

Try Aldi for your veggies it's great! Or I always trawl through the on offer shelf at Asda for bargains. I try and buy stuff we eat too, so we all have same veggies to keep price down. And its a good way to try new veggies yourself!
