Velvet has a sore eye, it's gone blue/opaque i discovered this on Monday night, i immediately text Traci (my head nurse at vets, and it's her piggie that had both Velvet and Onyx) she said it sounds like a hay poke.
Spoke to her again yesterday and said no change, she advised to call today and make an appointment to be sure.
I am now seeing Jacinta tomorrow afternoon.
I will be taking both Velvet and Onyx (for company) and they'll check out her eye and make sure there's no ulcer forming :{
Keep your paws crossed that all will be ok, i'll keep you all informed :...

Bless her, does sound like hay poke is possible. Gwen did this not so long ago, her eye came up quite nasty looking but within a couple of days of chloramphenicol eye drops it looked normal again. (Stuck with the drops for a full week though to be sure!)

Loves to Velvet, and Onyx too. Good luck at the vets. xx

Sounds like she has probably got a poke or something firmly stuck under her eyelid (Dizzy managed that twice). Thankfully, eyes tend to clear as quickly as they come on.

My tip for getting gel into a squirming piggy's eye that won't let you come near it is sitting it on your lap facing way from you with a plate of food. You have a far better chance at getting at the eye from behind when said piggy is fully absorbed stuffing pigself...

Best of luck, and get better soon, Velvet!

Sadly it looks like a cataract :...
Jacinta looked into her eyes and said she still has vision and there is no scratches.......she then did the dye in the eye and said it's definitely something from within.........
I've spent the last 1/2hr looking at the possibilities so far i don't think it's diabetes, yes she's a drinker but i don't think excessive, i'll be keeping a good watch on her tho......bit hard with the both of them tho.
I'm to give her metacam twice daily 2 drops just in case there's any inflammation and as a precaution, check with Jacinta in 5-7 days and update her. I MUST keep a strict eye on her, any changes and i'm to phone and go immediately so they can do further tests, she also said i could go to an eye specialist if things get bad :...
They also gave me some saline as i asked if this might help by keeping the eye moist ?

If anyone has any suggestions i'd really really appreciate it, i don't want my baby to loose her sight or for anything worse to happen i'll do anything to help her.

Thankyou :...:...8...

Aw, sorry it wasn't "better" news Glynis. Did the 'cataract' appear suddenly? I ask because Errol has what looks like a cataract in one eye, but it appeared overnight - literally, overnight. His diagnosis was lens luxation; a slipped lens. Looks like cataract, but appeared very suddenly and the size and shape of his lens.

Piggies don't rely on their sight much, so if this is something permanent for Velvet, she may be a touch quieter than usual for a little while (loss of what little vision they've got can and does often throw them a bit) but she will adapt.

xx

I am very sorry; cataracts are never a pleasant diagnosis!

How quickly did it appear? Mischief's first eye went opaque within a week or so. My vet told me that it was called nuclear sclerosis. She was rather down about it at first, but picked up soon. Thankfully, sight is not the strongest sense and piggies learn to compensate by their other senses.

Make sure that you do not approach Velvet from her blind side without alerting her; blind piggies do not like being surprised.

Mischief's second eye went about three months later; this time a "normal" cataract which appeared as small white dots that eventually grew bigger until they filled the lens. I noticed that prior to that, her eye had a slight glassy, bluish cast to it for a few weeks - but then I'd been watching her very carefully. My vet had told me that there was a good likelihood that her second eye would go as well. He assumed that it was congenital.

However, after an adjustment phase, Mischief took up her old life whithout much difference. She even followed me (and my voice) around the garden!

Thankyou all again, you're all just wonderful xx>>>xx>>>
I have had many people researching this cause for some reason it's just bugging me why and how and.........too many questions in my mind!

Spoke to Jacinta today and she's spoken to Brendan they still feel it's a cataract....but they also question is it from her background, is it diabetes? i now have to observe............. and they would like me to get a urine sample in case it's diabetes.

Velvey says thanks to everyone for their concern but she says 'hey what's up folks i'm fine ' honestly this girl has not lost a beat she is running around like usual and doing everything she usually does and no she's not lost an ounce!
I know to look for excessive water use...so hard tho when two are using the bowl and the bottle :{

thanks everyone x

Thanks for updating Glynis, I had been wondering how your dear girl was getting along.

It is odd that it should develop when she's so young, certainly warrants some further thought as Jacinta and Brendan are doing.

xx

It might worth checking which foods you can feed Velvet to get a proper urine result. I have read somewhere in a thread that most foods actually give a wrong reading and piggies are diagnosed with diabetes that aren't diabetic.

Is it worth contacting the CCT about that?

Just found this thread, Glynis
our boys send their love, particularly Arthur, who can't see v well himself
