Ginge became ill in the night, very very quickly! Was up syringe feeding but he stopped swallowing at 5am.

Got him to the vet this morning once they opened, they couldn't register his temperature as it was so low and then he had a fit. He's had a small amount of nasal discharge but just been really flat and lathargic.

They have put him on oxygen, heat pad an giving glucose to trying to pick him up but we aren't hopefull - looks like my trio might be down to two

I am so sorry to read this, how heartbreaking :( Ginge is in the right place at the vets, keeping him in my thoughts. Huge hugs, please keep us updated on any developments x

Thanks, luckily I live right around the corner from a recommend one from here.

I worry he's too far shut down to recover but who knows.

It is good you got him there when you did. You have honestly done all you can. It is out of your hands now, Piggies are such strong little creatures, I am hoping Ginge will turn a corner and the specialist vet care he is receiving will help him. Massive hugs

They can decline at a worrying pace, but you have done the right thing by giving him a chance.

Praying they find the cause and can start treatment x

Thanks for the support guys!

I'm always popping in and out of this forum, neglecting it at time but there is always support here when you need it. This site has taught me so much about guinea pig care, without it i would have never known about syringe feeding and how quickly to react to vet care - staff should be very proud of themselves!

That is what the forum is here for. x

I'm sorry he is so poorly. Keeping everything crossed for a miracle.

BIG HUGS
I am so sorry and am sending my vibes, but it is not sounding good.

Sometimes, piggies can go downhill right out of the blue very quickly. it can really leave you reeling! :(

Sadly the vet just rang, and Ginge has just passed away - vet said they tried everything they could but he wasn't responding to treatment and slipped away.

Cant help but think it was something i did but the vet wasn't really too sure why he deteriorated, just that he may have picked up some kind of infection.

I'm so sorry, it won't have been anything you did, they can shut down so quickly.

I am so sorry. Please do not blame yourself this is just the guilt that comes with grief as our brains try to process what has happened. None of this could have been prevented. It was unfortunately just his time. You really did all you could, syringe feeding him and getting him to the vet. Massive hugs x

I am very sorry. it is a normal part of the onset of the grieving process to have these feelings of having missed something vital when you are left with the question of what the heck has just happened. A piggy can go into multiple organ failure right out of the blue. Once the body is closing down, there is nothing you can do to stop it. Neither you or your vet have failed her. you have done everything right, and could not have done any more!

If it is any consolation to you, I have lost my Bethan that way - and she had a thorough MOT at the vets only two days before she died. All he found was the very early stages of kidney failure, which could not have been the cause of her death. :(

thanks guys, i think this is the case with him - he as been a bit thinner than the others for a little while but still happy and healthy. This just came out of no where.

the rescue they came from wasn't all that reputable and i wonder if hes older than we where told, alas we shall never actually know.

I read your post earlier and just popped back on to see if there was any news. I am so sorry to hear the outcome, please don't blame yourself. Big hugs

I am so sorry to hear this.. You gave him the best chance.

Sleep tight little one x
