The Colonel was doing a lot better and the vet said keep an eye on him and bring him back if he goes off his food or looks miserable.

Well today he's really bad, he's very chesty (rattles when he breathes), isn't bothered about food or water so we've been syringe feeding and watering him and his chattering his teeth all the time he's sat on me.

I'm pretty convinced he's got pneumonia as all the symptoms fit but I'm not sure what I can do while we're waiting till 1.30pm to go to the vets.

I've given him 5ml of smushed up P@H pellets, 5ml of Ellas Kitchen Carrot and Potato organic baby food and 5ml of water. All of which he took (with some persuading!). He's also pooed a couple of times and eaten them but he looks so unhappy and sick.

Is there anything else I can do or is just more of the same and keep him going till 1.30pm when we see the vet?

if you're holding him,try and hold him in fleece or towling, at least he'll be comf and warm. i think you're doing it all exactly textbook, not sure what else to do? just want to bump the thread up! x good luck and get well wishes x

You're doing all the right things. As mentioned above make sure you keep him warm. Good luck at the vets and let us know how you get on. xx

Keeping doing what you are doing, the fact he is pooping means the food is going through his system. I would get some critical care off the vet and also some bio-lapis to help with his appitite.

Good luck, I think you are doing great with him, ignore the chattering its for the best that you keep feeding him up. :)

i couldnt suggest anything else, everyone has advised greatly!

Let us know how the vets gets on this lunchtime.

Wishing you both luck x

You sound like you're doing a great job already. Please let us know how you get on at the vets.

Hope it goes well at the vets, you are doing great. Fingers crossed x

Took the poor little man to the vets and he's really poorly 8...

He's got pneumonia and is now separated from Big Red while we nurse him back to health. We've got 10 days worth of Baytril 2.5% (0.4ml per day) and he had an injection of Baytril while he was there (he squealed the place down which I guess is good) and his temp taken (he didn't squeal at that so I guess he's used to being violated by Big Red!).

He's a bit on the chilly side so we've filled one of the kids toy boxes with hay and shredded newspaper and put a head pad in for him. My youngest daughter has donated her fleece lined, fur trimmed cardi for The Colonel to snuggle with so hopefully he'll be warmer soon.

Had instructions to carry on with what we're doing (baby food, smushed up pellets and water every 2 hours) and hope for the best.

awww poor Colonel, wishing him a speedy recovery.

Come on little man, your mummy is doing a great job

Sending hugs and xoxoxoxo

I wouldn't seperate him from Big Red as they wont be able to be rebonded when he is better-trust me on that! You will end up with 2 single boars. Even though he is poorly, keep them together for company as being alone will stress him further.

You are doing a great job and I am sending positive healing vibes your way for Colonel x

I agree with Fi, keep them together I know from experience when I removed Cuzzy for mites that they may not rebond.

I would get the bio-lapis as well to help his appetite. I think its available from Boots.

Hope he picks up soon bless him. Keep us posted. :)

Cool - will put them back in together (and hope Big Red doesn't get sick as he's a nasty who bites at every opportunity!).

Bio lapis is available from the vets (I think you are thinking of rehydration fluid Lou!) in 50ml sachets. Mix with water and try to get as many syringes of that into him per day as you can. It aids gut function whilst taking antibiotics. Extra vitamin C would be advisable too, up to but no more than 50mg per day either a human tablet halved or quartered to the correct dosage or Oxbow GTN do 50mg tablets especially for guineas.

I got some critical care from the vet as well (forgot to mention that!).

The vet was great, really, really good with him - will be adding details of the practice to the vet thread in a bit.

The suggestion about separating them was made before he realised they're both indoor piglets as obviously The Colonel needs to be kept warm and snug while he's so poorly. He'll be upstairs in our room tonight (breaking ALL my rules about animals in bedrooms) so we can keep an eye on him. Poor little man hasn't really moved since we got back from the vets and looks very poorly. We had Big Red in the toy box keeping him company and he was really good with him - very gentle and snuggly.

Thanks for that Fi! :)

Hope he is a bit better in the morning! I'm sure he will pick up. Its a horrid illness but hes getting the best possible care. x

He's eating!! he slept all night, I know this for a fact because I didn't *insert very tired smilie* and this morning he seems brighter.

He's had his meds for today (vet suggested to give the Baytril with equal quantities of Ribena) and 5mls of smushed pellets and the same of water. He's also had some Timothy hay and unsmushed pellets.

He's in his toy box still (has the other one for company) so he's nice and snuggly. Only slight concern is that he's lost another 15g in weight since he saw the vet yesterday - he's now 102g down in 12 days - hopefully he'll perk up and start putting weight on again soon.
