Hi Guys,

I really do need some help and advice,

Both my fiance and I have owned out piggies for 4 years now, both girls, both sisters... One (Gucci) was the runt of the litter, and had many problems (lump on back - this was operated on, and a jaw infection which we treated several times... at great cost) In the end bless her, I went to feed them to find Gucci had died, this was last weekend.

Since then our other piggy Chanel, has been very sad and lonely, She has always been the stronger piggy, fatter, etc etc... She however is now very sad, off her food and off her water... We have bought new toys, spent more time with her and getting her out of the cage morning and evening for snuggles.... But nothing is helping her mood, or her apetitie!

I'm worried - please help or advise!

Thanks in advance!

she probably is really lonely and needs a friend. Is there a rescue near you where you could try to bond her with another girl? sorry for your loss by the way..

thanks for the reply suem, this is another option... as far as I know, we only have the local pets at home (where we got ours) and they only have a boy for rescue...

Any other ideas? She normally LOVES tea, to the point she will bite your finger off for it, but she wont even try that..

Where about are you based ? We could help to recommend a rescue close to you :)

near Ashford in Kent... Hope this helps..

Are piggies happy to introduce friends into their life?

trying to feed her now and shes had a bit of lettuce, but reluctant to drink... plus needs wont eat solid food...

She'll be very happy with a friend.

Taking her to a rescue you will be able to pair her up with another girly piggie. She'll show a huge improvement once she's been put with another piggie again, possibly even running around and popcorning as though she was young again.

Maybe this is what I need to do then - preferably a girl I guess? Similar age?

If she is refusing most food and drink I would get her checked by a vet just to be sure there is nothing else wrong. They can give you some recovery food to syringe feed her as guinea pigs need to eat often or they will go into gut stasis. Keep an eye on her weight.
Have a look here

Thanks for this, I will take her to the vet to get checked out tomorrow, then will see if I can get the day of to go to a rescue centre.... Shes been very quiet are barely eaten for the past 2-3 days now so getting pretty worried!

Have you got any syringes at all that you can use to give her pureed veg or mashed pellets just for now?

Speaking from experience, when Georgie passed away, Rosie was on her own for 2 years (back then I didn't know about rescues- and had the same concerns that if I went to a pet shop they wouldn't get along). Needless to say when I went to the rescue in May this year it was the best thing I could have done. My bereaved 6.5 year old Rosie is now happily living with 3 other girls.

I'm not sure of the rescues in your area off the top of my head, but here is the recommended 'Piggy bank' rescues list which are all reputable/recommended rescues :)

Thanks so much for this, its always good to know others experiences and do hope this works out!

Emailed my boss asking if I can get tomorrow off to take her to the vet and to find her a new friend, so will let you know how it goes... only have a tiny syringe but have managed to feed her with this... all being well, she will love me for it tomorrow!

Thanks!

Hope everything goes okay at the vets. About the syringe, i think most people use a 1ml one as it is easier to use and fit in the piggies mouth. If she is willing she may even take mushed up pellets off a spoon . :)

I am sorry for your loss! Piggies become withdrawn for a few days after they lose a friend. Some few may follow their friends, but most will thankfully come out of their shell again.

Finding a rescue that will allow you to bring your girl for piggy dating is the best and safest way of making her happy again. It gives your girl the chance to meet several suitable candidates (either sows or neutered boars of any age) in order to find the one she really clicks with - and the bonding will happen under expert supervision, which minimises any risks for you.

All rescues listed by the Piggy Bank rescue support network have been vetted by us; they will only rehome healthy and guaranteed not pregnant piggies. It is well worth going a bit further afield for it.

I have piggy dated several bereaved middle aged sows of mine, and always got a very loving friendship out of it, whether it was with other sows or a neutered "husboar" (who simply adored his "swife" ).

Best of luck!

PS: If you are worried about a piggy of yours, please weigh her daily; see a vet and if necessary hand feed - you can get tips for that on here.

I'm in Kent too. There's April Lodge guinea pig rescue in Sandwich and I think another one in Bromley.

Thanks for all your replies guys,

Managed to get yesterday off work so went to the vets, basically she has a lot of gas in her stomach which caused diahorrea, but also looks like she has a large tumor on her ovary, which is of course giving her a lot of pain too...

So either way not good, I have been given all sorts of things for her, including baytril, fibreplex, metoclopromide, and some emergency food sachets... I have been told to give her these until she perks up, then go to the vets to have the tumor removed and basically have her neutered...

Plus, to wait until she is fit and healthy before finding a friend!

Either way, things arent going well, to the point she wont even swallow the food, I'm really doing everything I can but dont know what else to do :(

I'm so sorry your piggy is unwell. It sounds like the vet has prescribed the right drugs for her so hopefully she'll be we'll enough for surgery. Makes me so sad that our little guys go through this. Sending big healing vibes to your little girl x

Hope all the treatment goes well and you're able to find her a friend soon. I can highly recommend piggy dating for bereaved piggles, it gives them a new lease of life when they get another friend. Poor little girl. Healing vibes :laluot_29::laluot_29::laluot_29:

Is your vet sure this is a tumour rather than a cyst? Ovarian cysts are very common and can be shrunk with hormones rather than invasive surgery. Hope she is better soon. Has your vet given you pain killers?

My girl had ovarian cysts a couple of months ago and they were WHOPPING. After we fixed that, she experienced bloat. It's very sad but very serious, the hormones are very useful to help reduce but will not clear her of them for good. Remove the ovaries and you remove the cysts end of. It s a heck of a risk though. I plummed for surgery because I didnt want her going back to the vets every 5-6 months wondering if they were growing. Painful and stressy for her.

INFACOL is fantastic on our girl for keeping the gut moving and helping relieve the pressure of the gas. Discuss it with your vet first of course! But my exotic expert vet believes that no guinea has ever died from infacol related overdose or toxicity! It simply helps the gas bubbles to form into proper moveable bubbles so they can be moved down more easily.. its a treatment for babies so can be found in the baby isle. My vet recommends 2ml twice a day for our 800gm girl who is currently nomming her way through baby food and a fair bit of cabbage (both make alot of gas one way or another).

See what your vet thinks but this might help relieve the pressure if there is gas build up.

So sorry for you and your piggys. Sincerely hope happier days are not too far away!
