I have not been very well recently, so have asked my mum to get me some wood shavings and hay. The hay is of good quality but the wood shavings are quite dry and not (in my opinion) suitable for the guinea pigs :(. Unfortunately the wood shavings are the only supply of bedding I have, so I was wondering if it's possible to soften them?:{
Also, i do know that quite a lot of people are against wood shavings, and i don't usually use them, but its getting quite hot and the fleece i usually use is starting to smell very fast due to the heat, and I refuse to use straw. I would use carefresh if it wasn't for the large price, because it is one of my favourite 'non fleece' piggy materials.

Put them in a strong bag and roll with a rolling pin. This beaks them up and reduces the chance of large sharp bits. Putting them in a bag of gauzey stuff and shaking them outside can remove dust.

Best of luck, Sarah

Have you ever considered using hay for bedding i don’t personally but i know alot of people who do, you just need some newspaper for a base, you may want to do that more than have the sharp wood shavings.

We use helms dust free wood shavings for Cookie, Sassy and Vimto. They are really good, I wouldn't use any others though as I haven't been impressed with other brands.

I use a shredded cardboard bedding. I used to used finacard, but at 13 pound a bag it worked out pretty expensive for the amount of time it lasted. I have now been using walmsley premier bed another cardboard bedding and got it from an equestrian place for only 6 pound a bale. I love it!

I have no advise on how to soften them but it may sounds like a silly question but are you sure they are wood shavings and not wood chip as there is a difference between the two.

Wood chip tends to be more courser than shavings.
