Sofia is a 5 year old female. She's my kissy, cuddly fur baby! She was great until today. She won't eat her lettuce, carrots, hay, or drink water. I have been trying to give her water and food with a syringe, but her mouth seems to be stuck or locked up. Her eyes aren't opening all the way and seem a bit goopy. She has started having some strange twitching fits where she just lays there and kicks and concludes. All our area exotic vets are closed. I'm not sure what to do! She's pretty lethargic and limp when she's not twitching. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm pretty sure this is the end for my Sofia, but if anyone has some ideas I would appreciate it.

Try calling any vet you can, preferably one that does know something about smaller animals, it sound alike it could be the back teeth overgrown, but not sure obviously. If you keep on the phone, the answer phone message should tell you the nearest vet that is open all night. It does sound like she is nearing the end though with half shut eyes and twitching 😔. Sorry you are in this situation. Tough, iv ebeen there too

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, my sweet Sofia passed shortly after my post.

Hi!

HUGS

I am very sorry for your loss. It sounds unfortunately like your girl has gone into multiple organ failure and was in the later stages of it when oxygen deprivation and the organs closing down is rather physical; thankfully by then a piggy is no longer fully conscious. :(

Here are our tips for emergency and crisis care; it includes a chapter on what you can do for dying guinea pigs if you cannot get to a vet in time. You may find it helpful to make sense of your experience. Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

You may also find these two guide here helpful. Guinea pigs can die suddenly, right out of the blue. It always comes as a horrible shock to their companions and their owners and takes time to get over. It is nothing you have done wrong and even racing her to the vets would not have saved her. Once a piggy's body has started to close down, nothing can stop the process. :(
