Hello everyone.

My guinea pig Dexter, is very, very ill. 8... :0 :(

Discriptions I can tell you about include:

: Swolen head
:swolen stomach
:Crusty/ guncky eyes (That look nearly closed)
: Not eating
:Not drinking
:Not pooing or peeing
:Not moving (He will shuffle around underneath his hidey, but won't come out. He will occasionally "roll" onto his side, but then jump back into place again.)
:Squeeking loundly in pain occasionally
: Deffenatly not acting hisself.

He usually moves and get excited (popcorning and wheeking) when I rattle a packet or get them hay or veggies, but today he didn't flinch, apart from sniffing some veg I sat infront of him then turning away.

He has been to a vet who checked him up and gave him injections to help him eat and poop and one to give him antibiotics.

Splat (my other pig) is fine but we took her aswell, just incase.

I cleaned their cage completly out and seperated the two piggies (using C&C squares) to see if Dexter eats or goes to the loo, so far, their is no improvement, his stomach is inlarged a bit though.

I have also placed some of his nuggets into water to let them go soggy, then put them into a siringe and fed it to Dexter, who, obviously, didn't want it.

Mum is going to pets at home to buy a hidey and a water bottle for Splat and some vitimin C for Dexter.

The only thing I can think of is Bloat. I am very worried that he might die.

Please can ANYONE help me?

I will answer any questions, just please help! :(

Is it Bloat, if yes, what should I do?
If no, what is it and how can I treat it?

Dexter, please get well soon baby! 8... 8... 8...

You need an emergency vet asap - if it is bloat, I have heard you need to gently rock your piggy to help alleviate any build up of gas but you really need to get to a vet. It maybe a intestinal blockage -
Please get the little one seen to :(

Hi,

Thank you for advice.
Our vet is very inexperianced with small furries, when mum mentioned about not eating and concerns about keeping digestion going and bloat they just said "leave him with museli."

Mum is now rocking him and masaging his belly.
And continuing to feed him nugget mush.

Thank you Renate! I got your email and will be ringing Paul now.
He is male.

Thank you everyone.

Please keep us updated - keep bumping the thread up as well as other very experienced owners will be able to advise you.
Wiebke, Suzygpr are just two that spring into my mind who are very good -

Thank you everyone.

We took little Dexter to the vets as his stomach inlarged once again. He was HUGE.

The vet told us that he had a twisted gut.

Sadly, Dexter's twist was so severe that he had to be put to sleep. :(
In a way, I feel releved for him, as he is out of pain and he is happy, I also feel very sad, and sorry for Splat, she is now searching around the cage, sniffing his smells that he left behind.

We did the little thing a favour.

We let Splat see Dexter when he was "sleeping" and she cuddled next to him and sniffed him, I heard this is suppoesed to let the guinea pig know what has happened and will probably calm her, as she will know were he is.

So, we all said our goodbyes by stroking, kissing and cuddling him while he lay asleep.
He was my own guinea pig, and I loved him very much, I am glad he is out of his misery.

When he was asleep I actually relised how big his stomach had got, as his face was unpuffed. He really was HUGE.

I will remember stroking him as he lay stareing into the distance.

Sleep tight Dexter. XXXXX

I am so sorry, I lost my 7 year old with the same thing recently, fortunately she went very quickly in the space of 12 hours, but it is still awful. It is nearly always fatal to piggies. You did all you could for him. RIP little Dexter x

Thank you.
Splat is not herself today, she is just sitting in the hidey, but, thankfully, she is still eating etc. She didn't even come out to me for her nuggies! :(

We did our best for him anyway.

Sorry to hear about your piggy. :(
Dexter was only 1 and a half. :(

I'm sorry to hear you've had to lose your piggy. Be careful as one of my pigs got depression and self harmed after losing his cage mate, since they were together pretty much since birth.

I was told, lots of love, cuddles, treats (favourite veg/fruit) and perhaps consider looking for another cage mate in a few weeks? Go to a rescure that will bond them? xx

Thank you.

We know of a male guinea pig that had to be seperated from his two brothers due to fighting. His owner is considering having him neutered so he can move in with Splat. Fingers crossed; I know Splat would appreciate company.
