Very unhappy christmas day fingers crossed for squirrel

Hi everyone firstly Merry christmas. I have a very sick piggie she has had diarrhea for days now tried everything but today she is going to vets.Have noticed she can not eat properly too so looks like teeth problem too.She was fit and heathly last week so this is a blow for me.Checked her teeth and its simular to my percy the front teeth are not straight there crooked .I have been syring feeding her as much as poss all day yesterday but she is getting frustrated now.I have her booked in today at my local vets at 10 am. I'm hoping they can help! Fingers crossed for my little squirrel x(4 years old ):...

Hi all just got back from vets they are keeping her in tonight xx bless her. They gave her antibiotics and a pain relief and are gonna keep close watch on her.They said that if she still is not eating by tonight they will check her back molars . I'm very upset I will keep you updated .Vet is ringing me later on :0.Thanks for all your kind posts xx
 
awww its so heartbreaking seeing them ill, at least she is in a good place right now, fingers crossed they can get to the bottom of it, sending healing vibes to your princess x

Hi all squirrel is still in the vets at mo xx They say she is eating hay now which is good. But still not eating properly so they are keeping her in another night.They have checked her teeth and there fine which is good but still does not sound promising .She is being syringe feed still? . They said they going to see how she is tomorrow after the pain relief has worn off. If she can still eat hay etc. If she is ok they say I can bring her home ! which is good Ill have to wait and see fingers crossed for her. Her sister Fifi is missing her and we are too xx
 
Today I collected squirrel but not good news .She has a ovary cist which is causing her alot of pain.They have given me pain relief for her everyday but have said that there is nothing really they can do! I did not want her to be put asleep today .So I brought her home and I'm gonna see how she is .She can eat and drink and is still pinging .I don't wanna give up on her yet! But at the same time if she gets where she is looking in to much pain I know the kindest option for her.She is sat near the heater snuggled up sleeping at moment .x Fingers crossed she will be ok.
 
Oh poor baby Squirrel :( Only you know when it's the best time to let go - if she's eating and drinking and still looks happy then make the most of the time.

Not sure what they are called but you can get some kind of hormone injections that are supposed to shrink or get rid of these kind of cysts with no need for surgery, not had dealings with them myself, but a cavy savy vet would know more. Some people on the forum have spoke about this too.

There are treatment options for cystic ovaries.
They are usually not painful. I would be concerned more about the diarrhoea.
Metacam and lots of fluids are required (supportive care).

Last Cyst I removed. Piggie was bright, eating, did not resent palpation and the only symptom was bilateral alopecia which resolved after the spey.

Oh goodness me that is big, what we are seeing there, is it the whole uterus too or just the cyst?
 
Hi thanks for all the info x really helpfull been looking into it myself as I can not just give up on her.Her stools are a bit better but still not hard .Could anyone recommend a good vet around the chichester area .I am willing to travel. She is 4 years 3 months.
 
She is still not eating on her own yet! I'm syringe feeding her still .She still has a mucky bum .She is pooping soft stools and runny too . ( she can't seem to break the food with her teeth either) Ill keep trying with her.
 
Hi. Dont know any vets in your area, but have just googled for you. There is one called Alphapets.
 
There is a sticky on recommended vets, but it may take a while to go through the pages.
Are there any local rescues to yourself that could recommend a vet that they use.
 
Hi michell - glad to hear you;re not giving up on her!

I would strongly suggest a second opinion by an experienced piggie savvy vet to confirm the diagnosis and then treat the condition. I'm concerned that your vet has made a diagnosis of cystic ovaries but then stated there is nothing more they can do. If it is cystic ovaries they can be surgically removed or, if less severe, treated with hormones....but the vet would need to feel confident about doing this and it sounds like they aren;t that familiar with this condition.

In terms of treating immediate symptoms: The diarrhoea/soft poops could just be her guts are not moving properly because she is not eating sufficient fibre frequently enough because she is in pain. Withdraw all fresh leafy veg and just feed hay, readigrass or fresh grass and mushed up pellets. She will need at least 120ml of mushed up pellets every 24hours. also keep weighing her daily to monitor for weight loss/gain.
Keep her on the pain meds. You might like to discuss with a more experienced vet giving some zantac as this helps to sort out gut motility problems for piggies with soft poops (or those who stop pooing)
