Hi,

I recently adopted a rescue piggie to keep my gir Treacle company after her companion died in February.

They get on great and Treacle has really perked up with her new friend however, since rehoming Savannah, I've noticed a massive difference in how wet the cage gets.

I only use newpaper to line the bottom and shred it to make bedding and then give them tonnes of hay. When I had Treacle and Toffee, the cage was never this wet but now, I literally need to replace the whole paper and hay base every day as opposed to every second or 3rd day.

I was wondering if it's part of some territorial behaviour brought on by introducing them in Treacles cage?

Any ideas?

Some piggies drink and hence pee more than others so it might just be that Savannah is a very wet piggy. However newspaper isn't an ideal bedding and will end up soaking - do you cover it all with hay? It might be an idea to use a more absorbent bedding (not shavings) or something that wicks away moisture like fleece or vetbed. Otherwise just use hay on top of newspaper and change it regularly.

Yes I put a layer of hay on top of the paper and then additional hay for eating.

Between the 2 of them they go through almost 1 large bottle of water a day - at the moment, I'm wondering if it's some kind of competition ::) When Savannah eats, Treacle want to eat (that very same bit that S is eating), when Treacle drinks, Savannah want a drink...I'm wonding if it applier to peeing too!

Is it definitely pee? I have 2 pigs that like to play with the water bottle and the paper underneath ends up soaked and needs changed every other day.

one of mine has a wet hutch regularly. It needs to be cleaned every other day.

I've got five girls living together and the newspaper needs to be changed every day. I go through a lot of paper.... Good thing is you can recycle that after it's been dried! (I've got all my friends collecting newspaper for me on a weekly basis)

With your girls drinking so much, no wonder you need to change the paper.
Don't just put two or three sheets down, you need at least 10 sheets in one spot to absorb the urine.

Happy paper hunting!

Dont worry - I do as well. I regularly collect 5 per day :D

Regarding your piggers, some wee more than others. Despite neither being big drinkers, Merlin wees 10 times more than Billie ever did.
I have to clean him out every day and bath him once a week as he likes to wee lying down as well and gets dried wee on his tum

Each pig is different is what I'm trying to say
