I have a male pig, and he's 7 and a half now. I was putting him out in the garden run for some fresh air this morning and noticed he's bleeding and looks like testicles are red raw. I'm unsure if he has had some sort of prolapse too. He doesn't seem in pain, and is walking around grazing but a lot more carefully. I've got an appointment at the vet for him in an hour or so. Just really worried what they will recommend with his age, he has trouble moving around as quickly as he used to and his partner died a while ago so he is on his own too. Hope they're going to be able to help. Thanks

Alot of older pigs get arthritis and have a loss of muscle tone around their rears. Hopefully the vet will be able to diagnose him, but I'd definitely talk to them about pain relief. The common one is Metacam/Loxicom. I've had a few older pigs get arthritis and it makes things more comfortable for them.

Hi! All the best at the vet!

Many older guinea pigs develop arthritis; boars can also suffer from weakening muscles at the back, which can cause impaction. If the pain in groin area is very bad, it may also impact further on their movement.

@Ollies41 hope your vet visit went well and they were able to help your piggie. Red raw testicles sounds awfully painful so I hope they were able to give you something to make it more comfortable for him.

Thankyou for all your advice, I just got back from the vet now. He said there was a great deal of impaction hidden deeper inside, and the tissue bleeding was some kind of a growth. He felt the nursing it would need to try and keep him clean and not blocked would be continual and not help to solve or improve the situation. He advised that I have him put to sleep for the best. Its hard to make a decision like that when it's hard to see the pig appearing in any real pain. I know deep down he was right though. Really sad.

So sorry that you have been faced with such a difficult situation.
That is one of the hardest decisions we ever have to make

So sorry, this is such sad news. These decisions are never easy. My heart goes out to you.xx

So sorry about your piggy :( 7.5 is a really good age so you must’ve given him a great piggy life!

So very sorry to hear of your little boy's health. Wishing you all the best with warm regards for both of you.

What a difficult situation to be in. Having to PTS is the last act love we can give our pets. It's not right to let them suffer. Guinea Pigs are prey animals and are good at hiding symptoms until it is too late to do much for them. Seven and a half is a very good age for a piggie so you must have treated him right and shown him a lot of love. Look after yourself and take time to grieve and most importantly don't blame yourself.:hug::hug: Have some cuddles cos you need them right now. Have some more because cuddles aren't rationed. If you need a hug you need a hug!:hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug:
