One of our boys I think may be in a bad way. He's spent the last few days more or less in his wee fleece hidey-hole. Just noticed tonight he doesn't appear to be walking particularly well, and he's hardly eaten.

My daughter actually thought he had passed at one point as he sort of keeled over. Trying to reach a vet just now. I'm hoping its just a sore leg and a vet can examine him, but never seen him so lethargic

I'm so sorry to hear about poor Pepper. You are doing the right thing in calling the vet as it sounds urgent to me. Hopefully it's nothing serious and he will recover for you. Have you tried syringe feeding him? He needs to keep eating so his guts don't stop working. I favour Oxbow critical care formula. but maybe try some mashed up pellets with a bit of warm water and see if he will take it off a teaspoon. Good luck and let us know how he is. :)

He's now at a local vet, the lady thinks it might be a respiratory infection. He'll stay overnight and we'll see how he is tomorrow. Think we are all glad we did this, we wouldn't have slept well otherwise.

You will need to get some food & water into your guinea as MargaretB said above. Have a look at the guinealynx page on handfeeding here http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html if you can't get Oxbow Critical Care then you can make a mash from your usual pellets. Is the vet going to hand feed him at all? You will need to weigh him every day while he is ill & then weekly once he's better to make sure he is maintaining weight. Often weight loss is the first sign of the start of an illness. If your guinea is on antibiotics then ask you vet about a probiotic, I use Bio-Lapis which is easy to make up & guineas like the taste.

Hope he will be ok.

Double post somehow - whoops!

Got the sad news this morning, that our wee boy didn't survive the night. I thought I'd be quite "manly" about it, but you don't realise how attached to them you get. So difficult conversation with my daughter later this afternoon.

RIP wee boy

I am so sorry for your sad news. RIP Pepper. Must be hard on your daughter, one minute sick and the next gone already.

So sorry about your little guy :(. Hope your daughter is ok, it's tough on them when they lose a much-loved animal.

For your other guineas, I would recommend keeping a very close eye on them & weighing them several times a week as respiratory illnesses can pass from one to another. Weigh at the same time of day. Any weight loss or worries about their breathing then see the vet with them straight away.

With best wishes to you all.

Aw... Very sad to hear this really this. It's always more difficult when you don't know why x
