Just a heads up so other's know to be careful when using vetbed.

Yesterday I was lifting Freddy out of his hidey for a health check and his nail must have been caught in the vetbed and was pulled out. Freddy is okay, I am poop picking every couple of hours to keep it clean and bathing his foot in F10 antiseptic. The toe is a little swollen but he's not limping and he's eating well. I'm keeping a close eye on the foot and will of course take him to the vet if there are any problems with it. This is the second time we've had this happen, the first time I thought it was just a one off fluky accident. I feel awful it's happened again and to sweet good natured Freddy.

I've just been looking at some of the vetbed we have and going over it with a darning needle (same thickness as a piggy nail!). Where the fabric has been washed the fluff has gone into clumps, the fibre is knotting together. I have lots of vetbed, different makes, some very old, over 20 years, probably nearer 30. The fluff on the older stuff is not as long and doesn't have this problem. One particular batch I have seems to be the worst, it's a very thick long fibre green back and is the same type Caspy did it on. When Caspy did it, I saw him catch his nail and pull it out, unfortunately I couldn't get across the room fast enough to help him free his nail before he yanked it. I'm not going to stop using it as it's fantastic for keeping my oldies dry but I am going to throw out the batch of vetbed that seems to be the worst. Wondering whether to cut the fibre shorter on some of the rest. I will also be keeping a very close eye on how long their nails are getting. Their nails weren't particularly long but were getting near to nail clipping time.

The other thought I've had on this is that both nails were inner front paw nails that curved sideways rather than down so would have hooked into the fibres of the bedding sideways which maybe has a bearing on why the nail didn't just lift out out of the fabric.

Sorry for the essay, hope it makes sense! If anyone knows of a make/type of vetbed that has shorter fibre more like the original type I would love to know.

Has this happened to any other piggies?

Freddy's toe is back to normal size and the wound has dried up. I've still not bucked up the courage to cut the other nails on that foot. I must do it tomorrow, they need doing, when he pulled the nail out I just took the pointy tips off quickly as he didn't like me touching the foot. I got a couple of photos today, sorry a bit blurry, was holding his foot with one hand and had the camera in the other. Missing nail on
right.
