Vet bed

Would people recommend vet bed for piggies who are not litter trained? I am fast running out of newspaper and straw and hay and would love to keep everything neater and less expensive!

If i got two vet bed cut to size and then alternated them when one was in the washer every couple of days would that be ok? Or is it preferable for the piggies to be litter trained?
 
Unfortunately you will still need newspaper underneath the vetbed as the wee just goes straight through it, so the surface stays dry. Vet bed is fab, we use it but we probably actually use more newspaper than when we used to use Megazorb as the more messy alternatives soak up the urine, the fleece isn't designed to do that., meaning that the paper needs to be changed daily.
 
So does megazorb actually soak up the wee properly then? i am thinking of geting a litter tray and only having the hay in there so i can see if they will be litter trained (i have managed it with my extremely messy buns but not this lot yet!

I am wondering what to put on the rest of the floor instead of the newspaper and straw they have at the moment... and something that is not going to fill the landfill up every couple of days!
 
Megazorb is great, really absorbant, but it's also really dusty, even though it claims to be dust free - much worse than when we used to use shavings to be honest. Lots of people use Aubiose which is lovely, not dusty and smells nice, it's made from hemp. We only stopped using it because we had two rumbly boars whoe kept getting bits stuck up their bits!

Are you able to take old papers off friends or colleagues and ask them to save them up for you, that's what I do, my in-laws give us loads as they have a daily paper and my collegues do too. Most of these biodegradable beddings like Aubiose and Megazorb etc are able to be put in garden waste wheelie bins, so hopefully you shouldn't need to fill up any black bags with it :)

if you manage to litter train your piggies, I'd love to know how as it would be a handy thing to know! ;)
 
I think vetbeds the best!
I find old towels are better to use underneath it.....
 
I have read alot of about vetbeds on this forum. But what do they look like please?
And where do I get them from?

My rabbits were the most messiest buns i have ever had... they pee'd everywhere and poo'd everywhere too...
I moved them into a bigger space (a wendy house) and lined it with newspaper. I left it for a week and looked to see where they were choosing to do most of their peeing and pooing. When i cleaned them out i popped in a litter tray with newspaper, straw and hay in and left the rest of the wendyhouse without any bedding... they immediately used the litter tray and i only get the usual poo pellets on the vinyl flooring ( i think they hate peeing on vinyl ;D)...

I am hoping if i do the same for the piggies and use vet bed for the rest of the floor then pee's will go in the litter tray... I will try it with newspaper on the floor first to see where they wee and then do the same... Fingers crossed they start the weeing in the tray...

I have tried to give the bunnies something nice to sleep in due to the lack of bedding apart fromt he ahy in the tray but they have ripped to shreds various furry houses etc so i am geting vet bed for them anyway...

I do get newspapers from family (my piggies only sleep on the Times ;D) but i would rather use that fro recycling because once it goes for animals bedding it goes in the landfill round here... vet bed seems better because i can wash it and reuse and only use a small bit of newspaper for the bedding...
Just thought i would see whether people found it useful for everyday!

I bought a large piece and have cut it up so it covers most of the hutch with newspaper underneath - the rest just has newspaper/hay.
It works well for me, but its best to wash it inside an old pillowcase or duvet cover as its impossible to get all the hay out and I didn't want it clogging up the washing machine.
In this weather my pigs spend most of their time on the lawn in their run, so I just sweep out the hutch every couple of days and wash the fleece maybe twice a week.
