Hello everyone, I've rescued two boars, now they're clean and comfortable in a new home I thought a health check at the vet would be a good idea.

Apart from asking about worming them, are there any guinea pig specific questions I need to ask?

A good vet should check everything, including genitals and skin for signs of parasites or fungal.
Worming is only a concern if your new rescues have been living outdoors in less than pristine conditions and in close contact with other species. In well over 10'000 piggies passing through this forum over the years, we have only dealt with about a handful where worming treatment has been considered by a vet and only one case that has actually come back positive for worms ever.

Please quarantine them before you put them close to any existing pets.
Importance Of Quarantine

I don't have any other piggies, they're currently in a large indoor cage while I work out what to do with their hutch (burn it or scrub it)
They had been neglected in a back garden for some time in a dirty cage before I got them yesterday.
The quarantine, does that apply to other pets and people, I have two cats.

I've checked them over and I'm sure there are no lice, mites I believe are difficult to spot but there's no skin irritation or scratching going on. Their ears and eyes look clean and clear and now I've bathed and trimmed their hair they're clean around their bums.

I'll be sure to ask the vet to check everything.

I don't have any other piggies. Do they need quarantining from people and cats?
I do wash my hands after handling and put them on a towel on my lap, that's as far as they've been as I've only had them 24 hours.

A vet check is always a good idea especially as the poor piggies have been neglected. Did you inherit the hutch with the piggies? If so I dread to think of the state of it and I would burn it to get rid of any traces of anything nasty.

Do you have a cavvy savy vet near you?

Yeah the hutch came with them. I'm thinking burning it (not in this weather) will be the best option. Starting from scratch with all fresh equipment.

Do you have a list of cavy savvy vets? I haven't fully explored the site yet.

There is a vet locator at the top of the page. I'll link it in for you.

We have got a recommended UK vets locator on the top bar. ;)

Hello, welcome and well done for giving 2 piggies a better life than the one they knew before. I hope the vet checks throw up, no surprises. It sounds like you’ve given them a good once over. And I’m sure they feel better for having had a bath and a bum trim.
