Hi all,
This is my first post so I hope I've put this in the right place. I have two lovely rescue guineas, Pickles (in my picture) and her partner in crime Fatman. The two adore each other!
Pickles had not been herself for a day or two, a really high pitched wheeking whenever I saw her that would stop when I went and got her. I checked her over and she seemed alert and happy. She's a very shy and skittish little one so alarm bells began to massively ring when she would just lie down all day and not run away as soon as she heard me coming. Again it was a very off and on thing, she'd do this for about an hour or so, then she'd be fine again and back to her usual self. I put her outside yesterday with Fatman and she had a whale of a time until about 3pm when I noticed she looked like she was walking with a sort of limp. She then lay down again and looked like she was jerking in her sleep. I took her straight to the vets and as soon as he put her down she fell over and couldn't right herself. She then seemed to be only able to travel to the right. He did loads of checks on her, he checked her ears for infection and couldn't see anything, mouth (she's been eating and drinking fine) temperature and checked to see if she had any neck pain, which she didn't. Again at some points during the visit she perked up again and was able to walk straight (still with the little limp). He said he wasn't sure what it was and gave her 2 injections of antibiotics and a non-inflammatory and has given me some liquid feed for her. She went rapidly downhill when I got home, laid flat out with such heavy breathing it looked like she was really suffering. However an hour or so later she would have a shuffle around and seemed alert again. She has been like this since and I am not sure if someone elses little guinea had also had this or if they perhaps had a more solid diagnosis from the vet? Her and Fatman are separated for now, I'm assuming this is the best thing to do seeing as I haven't got a diagnosis but is this separation going to add stress to her? They are so close.
Any help or advice on what the prognosis is would be so much appreciated. The vet just said her prognosis was "guarded" and if she goes "flat again" I might need her put down. I can't imagine how Fatman will cope without her :(
I am going to ring the vet again when they open but any advice or experiences in the meantime would really help me.
Thankyou so much for reading this!

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Was that an exotic animal vet that you took her too? Some vets don't know much about guinea pigs. If is was not you might want to try and find one. I hope your little piggie gets better soon.
Good Luck

cant offer much except find another vet! did he listen to her breathing?

The description you have given of your pig's behaviour is that possibly of being in pain or a neurological problem, without being a vet and not seeing you pig it is impossible to say what is going on. A more cavy savvy vet and an x ray would be my advice. If you give your location hopefully there is one that can be recommended.

Thankyou!
He did listen to her breathing and her heart and even turned the lights off and shone torches at her (I'm not sure what that checks for).
It wasn't an exotic animal vet, no, I've just moved into a small village last week very far from my old vets and so because it was a Sunday the only vets I could find open was one in a pets at home store 20 minutes drive away. He said unless I went down the route of MRI scans I wouldn't know what's wrong. I've taken a day off work today so maybe another vet might be able to give me a better diagnosis. She's with me now and her eyes are half shut and she's breathing heavily and jerking a bit again... so upsetting :(

Thankyou, I live in Mountsorrel near Loughborough. I've always had excellent vets where I lived before that have offered me no end of advice! I have found a veterinary hospital near me which looks to have an outstanding reputation. I think I will give them a call and see if I can get her an appointment today! I just want her to be ok XX

sorry i can't help with diagnosing the problem with your piggie, but i wish you luck today and really hope that this hospital can help find out what's up with your little one.

Sending hugs. xx

oh no, i am so sorry its sounds heartbreaking for you, thinking of you today.

Good luck with the vets, i hope you find a good piggy vet, thats totally what you need.

Welcome to the forum, i wish it was on a happier note. :(

Oh no, how sad :(
Hope the vet you have found can find the route of the problem and treat her. Know what you mean about taking time off, I took a week when my boy was really poorly as I just couldn't function :...had to be with him 24/7 until he was strong enough to hold his own :)
Sending gentle hugs and healing vibes to little Pickles and hope it's more positive news later x>> (off to work in a while)

Hi again!
thanks all for your messages earlier, I just thought I'd update you on what's happened this morning.

I found a decent vet in the next town and she was amazing. She said that there is no point looking down her ears; she could feel her swollen glands and could tell it was either an ear infection or a localised infection affecting her balance. Cue two more injections for Pickles and she's been prescribed a course of antibiotics (rather than just the one off dose my other vet gave yesterday). She also apparently has a small abscess under her chin but she says I shouldn't worry too much about it unless she doesn't get better. She's also been given ear drops for a week aswell and she's lost a bit of weight (maybe due to the infection). The best news is that the vet said it's very unlikely it's anything more serious, the total opposite to what my other vet said yesterday so I am over the moon with relief!

I think this whole experience has taught me to get a second opinion if you feel you haven't got all the answers you want. The vet said she can be reunited with Fatman now and so she's outside on the grass, like a different guinea pig! I can't believe this is the same poor soul I was nursing this morning! Fatman is so glad to have her back aswell. I'm going to keep an eye on this lump and one of her eyes is "sticking out" a bit, but the vet said this might be where the other one has retracted a bit where she struggled with one side of her body.
Fingers crossed for her :)

Awww, crossing everything for her, hope she's back to full fitness soon. Glad you went to another vet, the first one didin't sound like he'd had much piggie experience.

Do you know what everyone? I think sometimes the guineas know more than we do. Just put both my guineas back in the same hutch and Fatman walked straight over to her rumbling quietly, the lifted up her ear with his nose and started licking under it! Never seen anything like it, she must have told him where it hurt, or maybe he can sense her infection. She hasn't used her ear drops yet so he can't be smelling those! Crazy! That's true love for you!

That is too cute!

I'm so glad your new vet found out what the problem was! Relatively easy to treat, too!

Lots of wheeky wishes here that she gets better soon! xx>>>

Have just got back from work and checked your post - YAY - sooo pleased Pickles is ok :(|)
Such good news for you and her, sounds like a brilliant vet. Maybe put the practise name and details on the recommendations sticky for others in your area ?/ People will travel miles for a good vet :))
Really made up for you and send hugs to Pickles :)p

Just thought I'd let you know, Pickles died last night. I found her this morning. She had been so much better since the antibiotics and had been so much her usual self me and her had a big photo session on Friday to celebrate her getting better. She had finished her course of antibiotics and drops and seemed so well again, running and jumping around. Fatman is heartbroken, and I am too. I am so lucky we had such a lovely session on Friday, just me and her time and we had so many cuddles and took lots of silly pictures of me and her I'm so thankful I have those pictures now. I dont really know what else to say.. I love you Pickles, I really do

oh no so sad, I'm so sorry for you.

At least you had Friday, like you say, try to just think about that...

Aaaw, I'm so sorry. You did everything you could. :(

I am so sorry to hear this! At least, you have some very precious memories of a most special day and the knowledge that Pickles can't have suffered much. Sadly, these things happen despite the best of care you and your vet have been giving her.

RIP Pickles - you are very much missed!

So sorry Pickles has crossed over to the bridge. You did absolutely everything you could for her.

RIP Pickles

Aw noooo. Hope you and fatman are ok.

Like you said you had lots of cuddles and she knew she was loved.
