New Born Pup
Hi all,
This is my first post so I hope I've put this in the right place. I have two lovely rescue guineas, Pickles (in my picture) and her partner in crime Fatman. The two adore each other!
Pickles had not been herself for a day or two, a really high pitched wheeking whenever I saw her that would stop when I went and got her. I checked her over and she seemed alert and happy. She's a very shy and skittish little one so alarm bells began to massively ring when she would just lie down all day and not run away as soon as she heard me coming. Again it was a very off and on thing, she'd do this for about an hour or so, then she'd be fine again and back to her usual self. I put her outside yesterday with Fatman and she had a whale of a time until about 3pm when I noticed she looked like she was walking with a sort of limp. She then lay down again and looked like she was jerking in her sleep. I took her straight to the vets and as soon as he put her down she fell over and couldn't right herself. She then seemed to be only able to travel to the right. He did loads of checks on her, he checked her ears for infection and couldn't see anything, mouth (she's been eating and drinking fine) temperature and checked to see if she had any neck pain, which she didn't. Again at some points during the visit she perked up again and was able to walk straight (still with the little limp). He said he wasn't sure what it was and gave her 2 injections of antibiotics and a non-inflammatory and has given me some liquid feed for her. She went rapidly downhill when I got home, laid flat out with such heavy breathing it looked like she was really suffering. However an hour or so later she would have a shuffle around and seemed alert again. She has been like this since and I am not sure if someone elses little guinea had also had this or if they perhaps had a more solid diagnosis from the vet? Her and Fatman are separated for now, I'm assuming this is the best thing to do seeing as I haven't got a diagnosis but is this separation going to add stress to her? They are so close.
Any help or advice on what the prognosis is would be so much appreciated. The vet just said her prognosis was "guarded" and if she goes "flat again" I might need her put down. I can't imagine how Fatman will cope without her
I am going to ring the vet again when they open but any advice or experiences in the meantime would really help me.
Thankyou so much for reading this!
